Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
Waldorf, MD - Road Warriors pitchers struck out 12 Blue Crabs, while their hitters pummeled Southern Maryland pitchers to the tune of 13 hits in an 8-0 Road Warriors victory on Tuesday night at Regency Furniture Stadium in front of 2,257 patrons. The loss pushed the Blue Crabs two games behind the Bridgeport Bluefish for the lead in the Atlantic League's wild card standings.
The Blue Crabs fell into a deep hole as the Road Warriors scored the first five runs of the game over the first three innings. The visitors scored two in the first on RBI singles from first baseman Luis Nieblas and third baseman Melvin Dorta. They added another run in the second on a solo homer by catcher Josh Johnson (9) before picking up two more in the third on Dorta's second RBI single of the night, and a RBI single from Johnson to make the score 5-0 Road Warriors.
Things stayed that way until the eighth inning when the Road Warriors added three unearned runs. Two fielding errors by Blue Crabs shortstop Tanner Townsend led to the runs as the Road Warriors built their biggest lead of the night at 8-0.
The Blue Crabs left seven men on base, including four in scoring position as they could muster only one extra base hit, a double by leftfielder Kody Kirkland in the seventh.
No one had more than one hit for Southern Maryland, while the Road Warriors got three hits apiece from Johnson, Dorta and Nieblas. Johnson scored two runs and drove in two others, Dorta drove in a run and scored once, and Nieblas scored one and drove in one. Second baseman Marcos Cabral chipped in with a 2-3 night with two doubles and two runs scored.
Starter MiguelMartinez (6-11) got the win for the Road Warriors after tossing five shutout innings, while allowing one hit and striking out six. The loss went to Blue Crabs starter Jason Waddell (4-8) who allowed five runs on nine hits in only three frames.
The Blue Crabs will now welcome the aforementioned Bluefish to Regency Furniture Stadium for the first of a critical three-game series on Wednesday at 7:05. Southern Maryland will send righty Nick Green (9-5, 3.59 ERA) to the hill against fellow-righty Esteban Yan (5-11, 4.23 ERA) of the Bluefish. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
