Northern Arizona Wranglers News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Wranglers have found their signal caller! The team welcomes quarterback Jayru Campbell, to Northern Arizona, for the 2022 season.
Campbell (6'5", 215 lbs.) is originally from Detroit, Mich., where he played football at Cass Tech High School. He earned a full-ride scholarship to play football in his home state, at Ferris State University, in Big Rapids, Mich. Campbell majored in integrated studies, and received his associate's degree.
Campbell had a tremendous career for the Bulldogs, winning the Harlon Hill Trophy, as a junior, in 2018. The Harlon Hill Trophy is the NCAA Division II MVP award, the Division II equivalent to the world-famous Heisman Trophy. Campbell posted incredible numbers as a junior, as he completed 60.3% of his passes, for 2,931 passing yards, 27 touchdowns, and six interceptions. Campbell was also a major threat when using his legs, as he ran for 1460 yards and 21 touchdowns.
That season's performance earned Campbell the Harlon Hill Trophy, as well as GLIAC Player of the Year. Campbell was also named first-team quarterback for the ALL-GLIAC Team. In addition, Campbell earned himself the nod as first-team quarterback on the AFCA All-American Team. The Bulldogs finished the season with a 15-1 record, with their only loss coming in the championship game.
Campbell's senior season was cut short after he suffered hand and ankle injuries. In-between the injuries, Campbell threw for 1,306 yards and 10 touchdowns in just five games. He also added 236 yards on the ground and six touchdowns.
Campbell credits his family, and his upbringing, as his inspiration to play football. His older brother played football, and his parents were also athletes. Campbell said that being from Detroit, and not having much growing up, inspired him to dream big. During his childhood, Campbell also played basketball. Campbell started to gravitate towards football as he got older. For Campbell, his passion for the sport is fueled by the competition that surrounds him. Campbell expounded by stating: "competition gets me going."
Campbell says that he has been "blessed to be around outstanding talent," both in high school, and in college.
Campbell has visited Arizona before, but has never played for a team in the state. Campbell says he's blessed" to have the opportunity to play for the Wranglers. Campbell prides himself on working really hard to accomplish anything that he sets his mind to. Campbell says he can't wait to get to work, and surprise everyone, by turning the program around in Northern Arizona. Campbell wants to be a part of making the Wranglers a "highly respected team."
