Austin Wranglers News Release
AUSTIN - The ball bounced the way of the North from the opening kickoff as they went on to dominate the South 69-14 in the Inaugural Lone Star Arena Football Classic.
North linebacker Zach Petitt (Connally) recovered a booming Justin Putnam (Westwood) kick off the nets and instantly gave the North great field position deep in South territory. Justin Allen (Cedar Park) rushed the ball in for a one-yard touchdown to give the North the early lead.
After a sputtered South drive, the North quickly scored again on a nine-yard touchdown pass from Travis Watson (Cedar Park) to Bryce Vernon (Westwood) to go ahead 13-0 early. Unable to gain any ground on the North, South quarterback Cameron Jones (Austin) was sacked in the end zone by Alan Jones (Manor).
Finally able to stop the North on a blocked field goal by Bron Hager (Westlake), the South found the end zone on a 12-yard touchdown pass to Steve Shaffer (Westlake).
The South's momentum didn't last long as the North's Watson found stud wide receiver Jimmie Anderson (Round Rock) for a 14-yard touchdown. Anderson had five catches for 82 yards to lead all receivers for the North.
Lone Star Arena Football Classic MVP Colin Griffith (Stony Point) grabbed his first of two defensive touchdowns, this one being an interception early on in the second quarter after picking off a Will Mezger (Lampasas) pass. He also added 2.5 tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery also for a touchdown.
A team sack in the North end zone added two points to the South's total but they couldn't seem to get anything going on offense. One of the longest plays of the night gave the South their only other points as Mezger found wide receiver Austin Wrinkle (Lake Travis) for a 45-yard pass completion and the touchdown.
Unfortunately for the South, the North answered back with their own 45-yard bomb from Chase Markette (McNeil) to Mason Taylor (Westwood) for the score.
Game MVP Griffith sealed the deal for the North as he recovered a Jones fumble and ran it in for the two-yard score.
With frustrations coming out late in the fourth, the South had limited success for the rest of the game, with the North continuing to stall each South drive.
As time expired, the South's Jones almost broke free at midfield to take the ball from his own 12 yard line but was grabbed at the end by Ram Rodriguez (Leander).
