Spirit playoff foe finally revealed
The Spirit's first-round playoff opponent is no longer shrouded in secrecy, as the Quebec Capitales claimed the last postseason berth on the final day of the 2006 regular season.
The Capitales and the Spirit will begin their best-of-five series with two games at Fraser Field on Wednesday, September 6th and Thursday, September 7th at 6:05 p.m. Tickets for both games are just $5 for Premium, Field Box and Bleacher seats and $6 for VIP seating. The series shifts to Quebec for the final three games starting on Friday, September 8th with games on Saturday and Sunday if necessary.
The Spirit and the Capitales met 14 times in the 2006 regular season, with the Spirit winning eight of the contests. Bryan Morse picked up three victories against the Capitales to power the pitching staff, while Jeff Brooks led the offense with 14 home runs, two RBI and a .389 average.
The winner of this series will face the winner of the Brockton-New Haven matchup in the championship round starting on Tuesday, September 12th.
Wrapping up a record-breaking regular season
The Spirit shone in 2006, finishing the regular season with a record of 58-32. The 58-win campaign marked a new franchise record.
Spirit closer extraordinaire Kevin Fitzgerald also set a franchise and league record with 27 saves on the season, shattering the previous high of 21.
North Shore players were no strangers to the league-leaders this season as the Spirit made their presence felt in CanAm play.
Morse notched a league-leading 11 victories in 2006 and finished tied for first in both complete games (5) and shutouts (2).
The North Shore pitching staff as a whole led the league with a 2.79 ERA, 14 complete games and 13 shutouts.
On the offensive side of the ball, Alex Trezza led the league in homeruns (19), Andrew Wishy topped the board in doubles (27), and Vic Davilla finished tied for first in RBIs (61). Davilla also finished in the top five in home runs, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and runs scored.
In addition to the successful year on the field, the Spirit also had a successful season in the stands. North Shore welcomed a record 4,605 fans to Fraser Field on June 17th, one of two 4000+ crowds in 2006.
