John Kennedy named Manager of the Year

North Shore Spirit News Release

When a team claims both the first-half and second-half championships, secures its third postseason berth in four years of existence, and compiles a franchise-high 58 wins, due credit must be directed to the man at the helm.

The eight field mangers and media members from the CanAm League did just that when they selected the Spirit's John Kennedy as the CanAm League Manager of the Year.

"I am very pleased to see that John Kennedy has been named Manager of the Year by his peers," said Spirit Senior Vice President/General Manager Brent Connolly. "It is a well deserved honor. It has been a pleasure to work with John over the course of the baseball season. To win the first and second halves of this campaign, as well as the Commonwealth Cup is just remarkable. Congratulations to John and his crew!"

Kennedy managed the Spirit to the league's best record in 2006 at 58-32. His pitching staff notched an unheard of 2.79 ERA despite the departure of ace Ryan Bicondoa and an injury to third starter Chris Farley.

While Kennedy's crew cemented a postseason berth in mid-July, the team did not let up down the stretch. North Shore went on a tear late in the season, winning 24 of their last 28 games to secure the second-half crown.

Kennedy was the first-ever manager of the North Shore Spirit. In 2003, he was named "Northeast League Manager of the Year" after leading the Spirit to the Northeast League North Division Championship.

Kennedy was a utility infielder for the Red Sox, the organization with which he earned his "Super Sub" nickname. He then managed and coached in the minor leagues for six seasons. He worked as a scout for the New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies and Detroit Tigers for a total of 13 years, concluding in 1996.
