Norfolk Admirals Weekly: Admirals Get Set for East Division Matchup at Scope

NORFOLK, VA - The Norfolk Admirals earned four of six standings points this past weekend posting a 1-0-0-2 record in the three games played. On Friday, the Admirals rallied from a two-goal deficit to the Worcester Sharks, as Dave Steckel scored with 25 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime and the eventual shootout. The Sharks outdueled Norfolk in the shootout to take the game 3-2.

Saturday's Pink in the Rink game featured a sellout crowd and a fantastic finish. The two teams skated to a scoreless tie in regulation, but Jesse Blacker netted the game-winning goal at 2:21 of overtime to bring the crowd of 8.701 to its feet as Norfolk took the game 1-0. Goaltender John Gibson made 20 saves en route to his third shutout of the season.

Norfolk closed the weekend on Sunday in Charlotte with a 4-3 shootout loss to the checkers. The Admirals assumed a 2-0 lead, but Charlotte rallied to force the overtime shootout where it scored three times to secure the win. Norfolk's Antoine Laganiere and John Kurtz each registered a goal and an assist. The game marked the return of goaltender Brad Theissen who had been out with an injury he sustained on December 9.

SCOUTING THE PENGUINS

The Admirals and Penguins meet in a pair of rivalry games at Scope this weekend. Norfolk trails the second place Penguins by just three points in the East Division standings. Tom Kostopoulos leads the Pens in points (27) and goals (15). The Penguins are ranked last in the AHL in shots taken per game averaging 26.40, but is first in the league in shots allowed per game at 25.30. The Admirals have taken both games played between the two teams so far this season. Norfolk defeated the Penguins on Oct. 26 (2-1) and again on Dec. 27 (3-1).; Wilkes- Barre/Scranton is coached by former Admirals assistant and head coach Mike Haviland.
