Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY- Brooklyn first baseman Joe Genord homered, doubled, scored a run and drove in five runs as the Cyclones defeated the Hudson Valley Renegades 7-4 Tuesday evening in front of 3,015 fans at Dutchess Stadium.
The Renegades used their speed to draw first blood with a run in the third. Leftfielder Pedro Diaz started the inning by legging out a single on an otherwise routine groundball to second. After a groundout moved Diaz to second, centerfielder Garrett Hiott hustled on a grounder to first and beat the throw to the pitcher to put runners at the corners with one away. On the next pitch, Hiott took off for second. The throw from Cyclones catcher Jake Ortega bounced into centerfield, which allowed Diaz to score and give Hudson Valley a 1-0 lead.
However, Hudson Valley couldn't make it last as Brooklyn powered up with a four-run sixth. With one out, shortstop Branden Fryman lined a single to right on an 0-2 pitch. After stealing second, Fryman scored on a lined single to center from centerfielder Jake Mangum to tie the game. After a groundout for out number two, second baseman Luke Ritter was grazed on the forearm on a pitch from Renegades starter Zack Trageton to put two on with two out. That set the stage for Genord who drilled a three-run homerun over the left-centerfield wall to give the Cyclones a 4-1 advantage. It was Genord's fourth dinger of the year.
Hudson Valley, though, made a game of it by scoring two in the bottom-half. With one out, second baseman Cristhian Pedroza reached on an infield single to second. Rightfielder Hill Alexander followed with a single to right before first baseman Jacson McGowan poked a two-run double into right-centerfield to pull the Renegades to within one.
Brooklyn, however, picked up a big insurance run in the seventh. Designated hitter Renfy Aydon delivered a one-out, 0-2 single to left. After stealing second, a balk from Hudson Valley reliever Jose Roca moved Aydon to third. The next batter, catcher Jose Ortega, lifted a sacrifice fly to center and gave the Cyclones a 5-3 lead.
The home team was able to put runners at first and second with one out in the seventh, however shortstop Luis Arcendo was thrown out at third trying to steal and Alexander struck out swinging to end the inning.
The Cyclones would put the game away with two more runs in the eighth. Back-to-back walks started the inning before Genord rifled a two-run double down the leftfield line to make the score 7-3, giving Genord five RBI for the game.
The Renegades tried another comeback in the eighth. McGowan led off the inning with a double down the leftfield line. A flyout moved him to third, then designated hitter Luis Trevino drove him in with a groundout to first. With two out and nobody on, third baseman Carlos Vargas doubled and Diaz reached on a throwing error by Cyclones second baseman Luke Ritter. His throw, however, bounced off the Renegades dugout railing, stayed in play, and Vargas was thrown out at the plate trying to score and kept Hudson Valley in a three-run hole at the end of eight.
Closer Daniel Goggin pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to nail down his second save of the season for the Cyclones. The win went to Daison Acosta (1-0) who allowed an unearned run on three hits in five innings with six strikeouts. The loss went to Renegades starter Zack Trageton (2-2) who pitched much better than his numbers would indicate. The right-hander went 5.2 innings and allowed four runs over five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.
Brooklyn cranked out 11 hits with 10 of them coming over the final five innings. In addition to Genord, Fryman finished 3-4 with three singles, a stolen base and a run scored. Mangum went 2-4 with an RBI and run scored, while third baseman Yoel Romero also went 2-4 with two singles.
Hudson Valley had eight hits for the game. Leading the way was McGowan who finished 2-3 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored.
The Renegades will finish their series with the Cyclones tomorrow in a 7:05 start. There will be fireworks following the game. Hudson Valley will send newcomer, and right-hander Evan McKendry (0-0, 0.00 ERA) to the hill against fellow righty Matt Cleveland (0-1, 5.11 ERA) for Brooklyn. Tickets are on sale and can be purchased online at hvrenegades.com, in person at the Dutchess Stadium ticket window, or by calling the ticket office at 845-838-0094.
