Worcester Tornadoes News Release
For five innings both the New Jersey Jackals and Worcester Tornadoes displayed a swift and crisply played pitchers duel. However, a clash that witnessed no hits in four innings quickly turned on the Jackals in a pivotal sixth inning.
The Tornadoes (7-2) used a collective one-hitter to stifle the Jackal batters en route to a 7-1 victory at Yogi Berra Stadium for the 2006 home opener.
After Worcester's Bob Tewksbary doubled to begin the fifth, the first hit of the game, Pat Perry knocked him home and gave the Tornadoes a 1-0 lead. Still, the Jackals were just a run behind.
That is, until relievers John Dixon and Nikolic entered the top of the sixth inning and allowed a combined six runs on just three hits to Worcester. The inning also included two wild pitches and two hit batters.
Despite their six-run defeat, the Jackals (3-4) witnessed some positives. James Mondesir pitched excellent in relief of Josh Brey, who pitched a 1-2-3 first inning but sat out due to the one hour, 30 minute delay caused by heavy rain and lightning.
Mondesir, whose steady arm kept the Jackals at arms length, was relieved after 4 innings pitched (70 pitches), including one run on just one hit and three strikeouts
After a disaster-filled sixth, Worcester's starting pitcher Junior Guerrero carried a no-hitter into the top of the seventh inning with a comfortable 7-0 cushion.
Although he surrendered four walks in his six innings-pitched, the possibility of the Jackals being no-hit by Guerrero remained a possibility. However, Bill Peavey delighted the crowd with a solo-homerun that landed halfway up the grassy knoll in right field, thus ending Guerrero's bid at a no-hitter.
Guerrero led the way on the mound and the Tornado batters showed diligence at the plate, enough to outlast the Jackals in a game that lasted 3 hours, and 30 minutes.
