Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
FARGO, N.D. - Brett Wallace stroked a two-out, two-run double to cap a three-run ninth inning as the Gary SouthShore RailCats came from behind to beat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 3-1 Saturday night at Newman Outdoor Field.
With the bases loaded and the score tied at one in the ninth, Wallace knocked a Nick Fellman pitch just inside the bag at third, scoring Steve Haake from third base and Mike Rohde from second. The RailCats started the ninth against RedHawks closer Tyler Chambliss when Rob Marconi walked to lead off. After advancing to second on a groundout, Marconi scored when Haake ripped a double off the wall in left to tie the game. Chambliss walked Rohde and Eric McNamee before being relieved by Fellman, who struck out Isaac Omura with the bags packed and one out. But Wallace bailed out his teammate, picking the perfect time to record his first hit of the young season.
The RailCats evened the season-opening three game series at a win apiece, holding the RedHawks to only two hits all night and winning despite behind held scoreless through eight innings for the second night in a row. RailCats pitchers allowed only five baserunners all game, and Fargo's only run came in the fifth inning when Randall Simon took starter Chris Jones deep for his first Northern League home run.
Jones was excellent in his first RailCats start, retiring 10 in a row after a two-out double in the first from Nic Jackson. Jones coerced nine ground ball outs and held a high-powered RedHawks offense to two hits and one walk in five innings, striking out a pair. Alex Rollin followed Jones with two perfect innings of relief and Edwin Walker (1-0) struck out two in the eighth en route to earning his first win. Aaron Cook walked Carlo Cota to lead off the ninth but got the 3-4-5 hitters in the Fargo lineup in order to hammer down his first save.
The RailCats (1-1) and RedHawks (1-1) will continue their three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. when Tom Thornton makes his RailCats debut against defending Northern League Rookie Pitcher of the Year Billy Weitzman. That game will be broadcast live on 89.1 FM, The Lakeshore, and online at www.railcatsbaseball.com.
