Joliet JackHammers News Release

JOLIET, IL - The Joliet JackHammers (0-1) committed two costly errors leading to six unearned runs by the Schaumburg Flyers (1-0), who capitalized on the JackHammers miscues for a 6-1 win before 2,186 fans at Silver Cross Field on Saturday night in the season-opener for both clubs.

The Flyers scored three runs in the first inning against JackHammers RHP Aaron Trolia (0-1). CF Julius Thames (1-5) led off the inning with a groundout. 3B Vince Harrison (0-4) walked and was caught stealing by JackHammers catcher Phil Avlas. Schaumburg 2B Jose Valdez (0-5) reached base on a two-out error and scored on a two-run home run by RF Peanut Williams (2-5). 1B Jason Colson (2-5) followed with a home run over the right-field wall for a 3-0 Flyers advantage.

In the fourth inning, the Flyers pushed across three more runs. With one out, Colson reached base on a past ball after striking out against Trolia. DH Felix Jose (2-3) hit a single to move Colson to third base. After C Richard Mercado (0-3) walked to load the bases, SS Travis Brown (1-3) laced a single to score Colson and Jose and give the Flyers a 5-0 lead. CF Julius Thames (1-5) reached on an error to give the Flyers a 6-0 lead.

Trolia (0-1) surrendered six runs, (all unearned), on four hits in just four innings pitched. He struck out four men and walked two guys.

In the sixth inning, the JackHammers struck for a solo home run off the bat of 1B Freddie Thon (1-4). Thon smacked a pitch from Doug Glant (1-0) onto power alley in left field for his first home run of the season.

Loose Gravel: RHP Jason Novak made his professional debut on Saturday night. The native of Lockport came into the game in the fifth inning to relieve Trolia and pitched two scoreless innings. He is a 2008 graduate of the University of St. Francis in Joliet.

Loose Gravel: Trolia, Novak (1 IP, 1 K), LHP Devin Anderson (1.1 IP, 2K), RHP Drew Shetrone (0.1 IP, 0 K), and LHP Ryan Paul (1 IP, 1K) combined to strike out 8 Flyers, ensuring everyone at Silver Cross Field a free Baby Blossom appetizer at the three area Texas Roadhouse restaurants: (Joliet, Tinley Park, and Naperville).
