New Britain Bees News Release
(New Britain, CT) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (2-2, 28-39) defeated the New Britain Bees (2-2, 35-32) 8-6 at New Britain Stadium on Friday evening in the opener of a three-game weekend series in the Hardware City and the first contest played by both ballclubs since the All-Star Break.
New Britain starting pitcher Mark Hamburger registered a no-decision after allowing six runs (four earned runs) on nine hits (one home run) in six innings pitched, walking and striking out two. Southern Maryland starting pitcher Brett Marshall also did not factor in the game's final outcome after surrendering two runs on two hits (one home run) across six innings of work, walking two and striking out six while hitting a pair of batters.
Southern Maryland went ahead 2-0 versus Hamburger in the top half of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Teodoro Martinez and an RBI single from Frank Martinez. New Britain tied the game at two in the home half of the first when Jason Rogers launched a two-run home run over the left field wall which extended his on-base streak to a team-high 21 consecutive games overall. Trailing 6-2 in the bottom of the eighth, the Bees batted around to tie the matchup at six, highlighted by a sacrifice fly from Deibinson Romero that allowed Vince Conde to cross the plate after he began the rally with a leadoff walk, and a two-out, game-tying two-run single off the bat of Jonathan Galvez that scored Brock Stassi and Matt Tuiasosopo. The Blue Crabs would regain the lead in the top of the ninth inning against losing pitcher Evan Scribner (1-1) by scratching across two runs on a wild pitch and an RBI base knock from Teodoro Martinez which gave the game its final score of 8-6 as Cody Eppley closed the night out in the bottom of the ninth for his seventh save of the season, making a winner out of reliever Jason Creasy (1-1).
