Barnstormers Edged In Pitchers' Duel

July 13, 2018 - Atlantic League (AtL) - Lancaster Barnstormers News Release

For the first five innings on Friday evening, Lancaster's Jonathan Albaladejo and Somerset's Rick Teasley were brilliant.

Albaladejo could not sustain it through the sixth.

The Patriots struck for the only two runs they needed in their half of the sixth to beat the Barnstormers, 2-1, in the opener of a three-game weekend series at TD Bank Park.

After falling behind, 1-2, Justin Trapp worked the count to full and led off the bottom of the sixth with a double over the head of Trayvon Robinson in left. Albaladejo (6-4) retired Craig Massey on a shallow fly to left before walking Ramon Flores to fill in first base. Alfredo Rodriguez, the MVP of Wednesday's Atlantic League All-Star Game, pushed the game's first run across the plate with a single to right center. Matt Oberste popped out to second for the second out, but Albaladejo walked the next two batters to force home the critical second run.

Lefty John Anderson rescued the inning, inducing a force out from Endy Chavez for the final out.

Lancaster picked up its only run in the top of the eighth in a fashion that has become somewhat familiar. Darian Sandford beat out an infield single off reliever Logan Kensing, stole second and third and scored when Oberste, the third baseman mishandled the throw from Yovan Gonzalez.

The Barnstormers did not manage another baserunner, however.

Teasley (4-4) fired six shutout innings, yielding three hits and two walks. The left-hander fanned a personal season-high nine.

For the Barnstormers, Blake Gailen and Ryan Casteel each reached base twice with a hit and a walk. Vladimir Frias singled in the fifth inning. Robinson was hit by a pitch in the second.

Nate Reed (6-2) will take the mound in the second game of the series on Saturday against right-hander David Kubiak (4-1). Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 6:45.

NOTES: For the seventh time in the last 16 games, the Barnstormers managed fewer than five hits...Sandford became the first player in franchise history to steal 40 bases in two consecutive years...He has tied Gailen for second on the team's career list with 86.
