Potomac Nationals News Release
(LYNCHBURG, VA) The Potomac Nationals stole nine bases on Friday night in Lynchburg - including three when the Hillcats pitched out - and sprinted to a 7-3 victory at City Stadium. With the win, Potomac swept the four game series, won six of seven on their final road trip stayed within a half-game of Frederick for the second half Northern Division title heading into the final series of the season.
Jeff Kobernus set the tenor of the game in the top of the first. After he reached on an infield single, Kobernus stole second and third for the first of two times. As he broke for third, Hillcats catcher Shawn McGill airmailed the throw into left field to score Kobernus and make it 1-0 Nationals. Kobernus had four of the nine steals, which ran Potomac's season total to 206.
Zach Walters continued his scorching week and sparked another run-scoring rally in the second. His one-out double was cashed in by Sandy Leon's single to right field, and it was 2-0 Potomac.
Sammy Solis yielded a run in the second inning but escaped further damage with a double play ball. Another twin-killer ended the third, but the defense let Solis down in the fifth.
After a pair of strikeouts, McGill hit a grounder to third. Jose Lozada threw wildly to first and McGill was on board. Ryan Query then lined the first pitch he saw into the right field corner for a triple that tied the game. Query scored on a wild pitch and the Hillcats led for the first time since the third inning Tuesday.
From there, walks, more stolen bases and spotty defense doomed the Hillcats and helped Potomac pull away. In the sixth, Corey Brewer walked both Kobernus and Bloxom. Kobernus again stole second and third and scored on a wild pitch. Bloxom would score when Walters roped a two-out single to right that gave Potomac a 4-3 lead it would never surrender.
Eury Perez reached on an error by Jeremy Haynes with one out in the seventh. He stole second before Fransisco Soriano walked. Kobernus then singled to right field to score Perez. After Destin Hood was walked, he was caught in a run down between first and second. Soriano sprinted home from third, and Joey Terdoslavich threw errantly home to allow the sixth run to score.
Leon singled to open the eighth, Lozada walked and Perez sacrificed them both over. Soriano singled to left to make it 7-3.
Hector Nelo walked one and allowed a pair of hits to bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but got through the inning unscathed.
Erik Davis starts to open the last homestand of the regular season Saturday night at Pfitzner Stadium at 6:35 P.M. On Saturday the Nationals will raffle off a new car to a lucky fan and fire off the last Fireworks extravaganza of the year. Monday is Fan Appreciation Day, and the P-Nats will have exciting prizes and giveaways for all those in attendance.
