Vermont Mountaineers News Release

MONTPELIER, Vt. - The season series between the Vermont Mountaineers and Upper Valley Nighthawks concluded on Monday with the 'Hawks topping Vermont, 4-3 in a rain-shortened affair.

Upper Valley first baseman Cade Sorrells (Monroe, Ga./Lipscomb) drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning with a single before the came was called off due to torrential downpour in the seventh. Matt Rothenberg (Boca Raton, Fla./Harvard) scored what proved to be the game-winning run after being hit by a pitch and scoring on Sorrells' hit.

Vermont starter Jared Skolnicki (Pittsburgh, Pa./Kent State) pitched all six innings and suffered his third loss of the season. The lefty gave up four runs on six hits, walking two batters and striking out four.

Upper Valley kicked off the scoring in the game when Luke Reynolds (Forest, Miss./Southern Miss) ripped an RBI double, driving in Ryan Jeffers (Raleigh, N.C./UNC Wilmington), who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the first inning.

Vermont responded with three runs of its own, but that's all the offense the Mountaineers could manage in the game. Second baseman Ben Bavly (Newton, Mass./Northeastern) and third baseman Brett Malm (Medford, N.Y./Adelphi) both had RBI hits, with Malm's driving in a pair of runs.

The Nighthawks scored two runs in the second to tie the game back up before pushing across the game-winning run in the sixth. James McConnon (Springfield, Pa./St. Joseph's) hit his furthest home run of the season with two outs and a runner on in the seventh, striking the radar gun atop Recreation Field's leftfield scoreboard.

The Mountaineers only got one hit outside of the first inning.

Nighthawks reliever David Sampson (Bellingham, Mass./Plymouth State) picked up the win after not allowing a hit over two innings. Sampson walked one batter and fanned four.

Vermont (16-23) will begin a four-game road trip on Tuesday in New Bedford, Mass., where they will face the New Bedford Bay Sox for the final time in the regular season. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at Paul Walsh Field. The Mountaineers will return home after the all-star break for their final home game of the regular season on August 1. All games can be heard on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online through The NECBL Broadcast Network.
