Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Upper Valley Nighthawks claimed game four of this season's in-state Governor Cup rivalry, collecting a 4-1 victory over the Vermont Mountaineers on Saturday afternoon at Maxfield Sports Complex in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.
The Mountaineers picked up their lone run almost immediately, with lead-off batter Austin Gauthier (Lorton, Va. / Hofstra University) driving a double to right field. An error by Brian Moore on a Corey DiLoreto (Reading, Mass. / Northeastern University) at-bat with two outs gave Gauthier supple time to make the dash from second to home.
Vermont's defense proved stable until the Nighthawks broke through in the bottom of the fifth. Quickly loading the bases, the Upper Valley offense ripped off four straight runs on a Gehrig Anglin single, Gregory Hardison sacrifice, and Cole Frederick double. The 4-1 lead proved insurmountable for the Mountaineers, who were unable to find much offensive momentum for the rest of the game.
William Carnley acquired the win for Upper Valley, giving up all seven Vermont hits in as many innings while striking out five. Alec Huertas (Bethlehem, Pa. / Long Island University) took the loss, giving up six drives and four runs in five frames. Aaron Haase earned the save, coming in for the final inning and securing the Nighthawks win.
The loss puts the Mountaineers at 12-11 and back in the middle of a hotly-contested NECBL Northern Division where the top five teams are separated by four games. Vermont will return home for a three-game homestand, taking on the Southern Division-leading Mystic Schooners tomorrow, Jul. 7. Opening pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Montpelier Recreation Field.
You can listen along all season long on the NECBL Broadcast Network.
