Nighthawks Have Big All-Star Weekend

Rockville, MD. The ABA All-Star Weekend was truly one for the birds. With 3 plyers and their head coach involved in the festivities in Sunrise, FL, the Maryland Nighthawks stole the show. Guard Randy "White Chocolate" Gill took home the 3-Point Shooting crown, forward Ray "Hops" Cunningham claimed the Slam Dunk Contest and forward Lawrence Moten and coach Keith Williams helped lead the East All-Stars to victory.

Gill, making his return to the ABA after a successful run with Guaiqueries de Margarita of the Venezuelan Basketball League, won the 3-Point Shooting Contest. In the final round of the event he scored an impressive 36 points.

Cunningham dominated the Slam Dunk Contest with perfect scores, scoring 50 points in both rounds of the contest. Cunningham clinched the win when he nailed a dunk that started with a pass from teammate Gill that bounced off the shot clock, over the camera man and into Cunningham's hands slamming it home and bringing down the house.

Moten, a strong contender for game MVP honors, had an impressive performance during the game with 16 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds and one steal. Cunningham and Gill both played well with each chipping in four points. The East squad, with Williams as an assistant coach, led by 23 at one point, but the West roared back and took a 10-point lead in the 4th quarter. They could not hold the lead and the east was victorious 129-127.

The Nighthawks play this Sunday Feb 19 at 6pm at Montgomery College, Rockville Campus, when they take on the Newark Express coached by former NBA star Darryl "Chocolate Thunder" Dawkins. tickets are available online at Ticketweb.com or through the MCC Box Office.
