Maryland NightHawks News Release
Rockville, MD -Randy "White Chocolate" Gill scored 22 of his team high 27 points in the first half, and Dennis Edwards added 22 points and eight rebounds to help the Maryland Nighthawks beat the Wilmington Sea Dawgs 114-107 on Saturday night.
With Wilmington up 26-25 with 3:27 remaining in the first quarter, Maryland went on 15-5 run which carried into the second quarter. Randy Gill contributed seven points in this run, including a 23 foot three pointer on a 3D possession, resulting for four points.
The Nighthawks led 60-55 at halftime and both teams kept the game in reach throughout the third quarter. Both teams scored 20 points respectively.
The Nighthawks opened the fourth quarter with the defense tenacity they had been lacking the previous two games, forcing two turnovers in the backcourt resulting in two 3D opportunities that the Nighthawks converted. Barry Mitchell (10 points) connected on two or three free throws and Hugh "Baby Shaq" Jones (10 points) knocked down a 24 foot three pointer with 8:52 remaining in the game to give the Nighthawks an 88-80 advantage.
The Nighthawks extended their eight-point lead to 108-99 with 45 seconds remaining, but Wilmington would not go down without a fight. Curtis Nash (12 points) knocked down a three pointer with 30 seconds left, and Kendrick Jones (16 points) stole the ball from Arthur Lewis on the ensuing possession which resulted in another Wilmington three pointer with 22 seconds remaining cutting the lead to 108-105.
Wilmington made a costly mistake by throwing the ball away from the official and was assessed their second delay of game warning resulting in a technical foul. Randy Gill connected on two free throws and Wilmington's Cedric McGinnis, who finished with a game high 37 points, was called for an intentional foul to stop the clock with 20 seconds left. Hugh Jones connected on both foul shots and put the Nighthawks up 112-105.
The Nighthawks will conclude their three game home stand when they host the Newark Express in back-to-back games on Sunday night at 6:05 pm and on Monday at a special 1:05 pm tip-off.
The Maryland Nighthawks will also be hosting a special MLK Day Clinic on Monday, January 15 from 11AM-Noon. All fans that attended Saturday's game or Sunday's game will be eligible to get a free entry pass to Monday's basketball clinic, which includes free admission to the Nighthawks game following the clinic at 1:05 PM!
Notes: With the game tied at 68 with 4:51 remaining in the third quarter, Wilmington's Cedric McGinnis committed a hard foul on Randy Gill while he was in the act of shooting. Gill retaliated and had to be held back by teammates and was assessed a technical foul. Gill said of the play, "[McGinnis] just hammered me from behind and it was definitely an intentional foul. After he hit me he was just grabbing on me and I didn't know what was going on. They've been playing us hard the last couple of times we've played them, a lot of intentional fouls, and I was just trying to get him off me."
