Nigel Hayes Signs 10-Day Contract with Los Angeles Lakers

WHITE PLAINS, NY, - Nigel Hayes of the Westchester Knicks, the official NBA G League affiliate of the New York Knicks, has signed a 10-day contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Hayes is Westchester's second call-up of the season and joins Langston Galloway (called up to the New York Knicks on Jan. 7, 2015), Thanasis Antetokounmpo (called up to the New York Knicks on Jan. 29, 2016), Jimmer Fredette (called up to the New Orleans Pelicans on Nov. 10, 2015 and to the New York Knicks on Feb. 22, 2016), Chasson Randle (called up to the Philadelphia 76ers on Jan. 10, 2017 and to the New York Knicks on Feb. 27, 2017), and Trey Burke (called up to the New York Knicks on Jan. 14, 2018) as the sixth player in the Westchester Knicks' history to sign with an NBA team.

Hayes (6-8, 255) joined Westchester as an affiliate player after attending training camp with the New York Knicks. He appeared in four preseason games for the Knicks, scoring nine points in 33 minutes, after participating in the 2017 NBA Summer League in Orlando, FL to average 5.2 points and 5.0 rebounds over 15.4 minutes in five games.

In 30 games for Westchester this season, Hayes averaged 14.9 points with 6.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists over 35.1 minutes per game. On Nov. 7, 2017 he scored an NBA G League career-high 37 points. At this time of his signing, Hayes' three-point field goal shooting percentage of 44 percent was sixth overall in the NBA G League.

Hayes played four seasons at the University of Wisconsin, averaging 12.4 points on 44.6 percent shooting and 5.3 rebounds over 29.6 minutes in 150 games. He finished his career ranked third on Wisconsin's all-time scoring list (1,857 points) and is the only Badger in the school's top 10 in points, rebounds and assists. As a junior, Hayes was named to All-Big Ten First Team and was named All-Big Ten Third Team as a senior and sophomore. He was chosen to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team as a senior and sophomore and earned the Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year award while being named to the All-Big Ten Freshman team as a freshman.
