Nicholls Stops 35, Spence Scores First, But Otters Fall 4-2

Ottawa, Ontario - Opening Weekend action for the road-tripping Erie Otters would come to a conclusion on Sunday afternoon, as the team would arrive at TD Place for their third game in four days. Taking on an Ottawa 67's team that started the season with a thrilling 7-6 shootout win against the home Oshawa Generals, Erie would look to clean up the mistakes that cost them on Friday night in Kingston. This meeting with the 67's would represent Erie's first game against the furthest-east OHL team since January 2020.

Marshall Nicholls would be the star of the first period, as the second-year Goaltender would have to set aside 16 shots from the 67's. This came as a result of four penalties against Erie, including a 1:41-long five-on-three. Erie would muster four shots in the opening period, with the offense finally waking up near the latter minutes of the frame. The final penalty taken by Erie would have 1:26 bleed into the second period, but the Otters and 67's would be tied at zeroes after 20 minutes.

Continuing to weather the storm in the early second, the Otters would turn the tables early as 67's Goaltender Max Donoso would take a tumble on a puck dumped in. Johnny-on-the-spot Elias Cohen (1) would take advantage of the miscue, and give Erie a 1-0 lead 4:29 into the period. In the ensuing four minutes, Ottawa would strike back for a pair to take their first lead of the game from Brady Stonehouse (1) and Brad Gardiner (2). Down for the first time, the Erie Otters would work to battle back to knot things up, but it would be Luca Pinelli (4) who would have the next goal in the final four minutes of the period. The period would expire with Erie carrying 1:53 of power play time into the final frame, down 3-1 and being outshot 29-15.

Erie would furiously shoot in the third period, doubling up the 67's in an 18-9 effort to start a comeback. On a broken play penalty kill in the late third period, it would look like curtains for the Otters, but after the apparent goal was called back and ensuing penalty shot was stopped, Erie would live on. Down by a pair still in the fleeting minutes, Nicholls would be pulled and the extra attacker would come out. With Elias Cohen streaking in, he would pass off to Brett Bressette who would find a wide open Malcolm Spence (1) for his first career OHL goal to make it a one-goal game. The comeback effort for Erie would fall just short, as a Tyler Boucher (1) empty-netter on the other side would give Ottawa a 4-2 win. Ottawa would outshoot Erie 38-33.

Erie finishes the eastern swing with a 0-2-0-1 record, looking to pick up their first win of the season on Friday night. The Otters will travel to Mississauga to finish out the four-game road start, before hosting the London Knights on Saturday, October 8 for the home opener.
