SOUTHAVEN, Miss. – RiverKings forward Kahlil Thomas and Assistant Coach Dave Nicholls will be on Live at Nine this Wednesday morning broadcasting from Peabody Place on WREG Channel 3. The two RiverKings will talk about their experiences as players of color in the world of hockey as part of Black History Month. Live at Nine is hosted by Alex Coleman and Mary Beth Conley.

Nicholls was one of the first ten black players in professional hockey and helped lead the way for players of color to participate in the coolest sport around. Despite some of the struggles he endured he never backed down.

"I just wanted to play hockey because there weren't a lot of blacks playing," said Nicholls. "It was more of a challenge to me."

Before Nicholls began playing in Canadian Major Junior Hockey, his father took him to meet Willie O'Ree, the first black athlete in hockey, who now serves as the NHL Diversity program director.

"It kind of gave me confidence," Nicholls said. "He told me to keep my chin up and keep playing no matter what—that sort of thing. It set me in the right direction."
