NHL Lockout Will Not Affect Bucks Or CHL Season
September 15, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Laredo Bucks News Release
LAREDO, Texas â The National Hockey League lockout announced today in New York will not affect the Laredo Bucks or the 2004-05 Central Hockey League season. For Bucks season tickets or more information call (956)-718-BUCKS (2825) or log onto www.laredobucks.com.
Effective today, the NHL owners have locked out the players after the collective bargaining agreement expired between the players and owners.
"The NHL lockout will have absolutely no effect on the Laredo Bucks or the CHL," said Bucks chairman Glenn Hart. "Our season will begin as scheduled, and we are continuing to sign new players, as well as our returning nucleus from our President's Cup Championship team. The last time the NHL locked out in the1994-95 season, minor league hockey received a significant boost in television coverage, and we are hoping to see that boost for the CHL."
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman made the announcement of the lockout following a meeting with the league's Board of Governors. The collective bargaining agreement between the league and the NHL Players' Association officially expires at 12:01 a.m. Thursday.
"We join the millions of National Hockey League fans worldwide in the hope that the involved parties can come to a timely resolution which will allow the sport of hockey to flourish in coming years," said CHL President Brad Treliving. "Our efforts remain focused on preparations for opening night on October 22nd and the start of our 13th season of play."
As a result of the lockout, NHL training camps, which were supposed to open this week, will be canceled. What this means is that the NHL season may not open on time. Back in 1994, there was a work stoppage that delayed regular season play until January.
"The NHL lockout does not affect the CHL or the Laredo Bucks season," said Bucks head coach Terry Ruskowski. "Because of the possibility of NHL players going to AHL teams, obviously the trickle down effect may see some AHL level players come to the CHL, hopefully to Laredo."
The 2004 CHL President's Cup Champion Laredo Bucks will opening training camp on October 11th. The Bucks will begin the season on the road in San Angelo on October 22nd. Laredo opens up at home on October 23rd against Corpus Christi.
