Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
Medicine Hat, AB - After being passed over in last year's NHL Entry Draft, Brett Kemp hopes to hear his name called in Vancouver this weekend.
The 19-year-old Yorkton, SK native was ranked 171st in this year's NHL Central Scouting Final Rankings released in April and he is in his second year of eligibility for the NHL Entry Draft.
After last year's draft Kemp was invited to participate in the Vegas Golden Knight's development camp along with teammate Ryan Chyzowski.
"I was invited to Golden Knights Camp about 15 minutes after the draft ended [last year]," said Kemp. "My agent called me and gave me the news."
Both Kemp and Chyzowski also attended the Golden Knight's Rookie Camp in September before beginning their WHL seasons.
"The camp was very competitive but fun at the same time. The couple weeks showed me what it takes to be a pro as they really showed us the proper way to take care of our body," said Kemp of his experiences at Development and Rookie Camp.
Kemp started the 2018-19 season with the Edmonton Oil Kings where he picked up 39 points (22G, 17A) in 40 games played before being traded to the Tigers at the trade deadline. With the Orange and Black, Kemp added 11 goals and 10 assists in 24 games played bringing his season totals to 33 goals and 27 assists in 64 games, effectively setting new career highs in all offensive categories.
"I think I had a big summer of training and focused on my weaknesses a lot more than I used to. I also think that my linemates were a big help obviously. I was able to play with great players all year and they made me a better player throughout the season," said Kemp.
He is a smart two-way forward with a deadly shot release and a knack for scoring important goals. Kemp has great vision and he is also versatile with the ability to play centre or wing.
This summer Kemp plans to work on all parts of his game emphasizing speed and strength as he believes speed is the biggest part of today's game.
Kemp is one of 18 Tigers eligible for this year's NHL Entry Draft that will take place Friday, June 21 to Saturday, June 22nd in Vancouver, BC.
