New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - Keith Brachold drove in all four Brockton runs, but catcher Jordan Newton's three-RBI performance sparked the New Jersey Jackals to a come-from-behind 5-4 win on Saturday night in front of 3,872 fans at Yogi Berra Stadium.

With the game scoreless in the bottom of the fourth thanks to solid pitching by Jackals starter Chris Allen and Brockton's Freddy Flores, Newton helped New Jersey plate the game's first two runs. After singles by second baseman Argenis Reyes and left fielder Jacob Butler, Newton ripped a two-run, two-out double just inside third base to give the Jackals a 2-0 advantage.

Brockton tied the score in the top of the sixth on Brachold's second home run of the season, a two-run shot to right following a leadoff single by center fielder Chris Valencia. An inning later, the Rox used a Brachold RBI single to gain their first lead of the game at 3-2.

But New Jersey immediately responded. In the bottom of the seventh, Newton led off with a single and advanced to third on a double to left field by newly-signed first baseman Jabe Bergeron. Bergeron's double chased Flores from the game. With reliever Santo Maertz on the hill, Newton scored the tying run later in the frame on a wild pitch.

The Jackals broke the 3-3 deadlock in the bottom of the eighth. Reyes led off with a single which third baseman Abraham Nunez followed with a walk against Maertz. Right-hander Colin Lynch entered and immediately surrendered the go-ahead RBI single to left fielder Jacob Butler. A Newton sacrifice fly extended the New Jersey lead to 5-3.

In the top of the ninth, Valencia ripped a two-out infield single off the leg of Jackals' closer Romas Hicks. The next batter, Brachold, missed his second homer of the game when he doubled off the top of the wall in right to plate Valencia and pull the Rox within one at 5-4. But Hicks induced a fly out by first baseman Melvin Falu to stifle the Brockton rally.

Jackals' reliever Edward Rodriguez (1-1) faced five batters and recorded four outs to earn his first win of the season. A hit batter was Rodriguez's only blemish. Maertz (0-2) surrendered the go-ahead run in the eighth to take the loss despite fanning three batters in one inning of work. Both Allen and Flores turned in quality starts in their second outings this season, but neither factored in the decision. Allen allowed three runs in 6 2/3 innings while scattering 10 hits. He did not record a strikeout. Flores yielded three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts in six frames.

Brachold finished the night 4-for-5 as the Rox outhit the Jackals 12-9 in the losing effort. Valencia added three singles and a walk in four at-bats. For the Jackals, Reyes and Butler each went 2-for-4. Butler, who hit cleanup, had missed the team's first nine games with an injury.

The Jackals (4-6) and Rox (4-5) conclude their four-game series on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends left-hander Isaac Pavlik (0-1, 1.59 ERA) to the mound against southpaw Logan Williamson (0-0, 1.35 ERA). A win would give New Jersey its first series win of the young season. Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.

Jackal Bites: The Jackals left just five runners on base in the win, their fewest this season... Former Jackal Clyde Williams made his season debut for the Rox. The Jackals made several roster moves prior to Saturday's contest. New Jersey signed 1B Jabe Bergeron and RHP Jairo Mendez. OF Jacob Butler was activated from the disabled list and 1B Jovan Rosa was placed on the disabled list. The Jackals also released RHP Seth Overbey and 1B/OF Matt Stiffler.
