Kearney, NE. - Tri-City Storm forward Nick Portz has announced a commitment to play college hockey at the University of North Dakota. Portz was acquired in a trade with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on October 16th and has skated in all seven games with the Storm in the time following the transaction. Portz was selected 223rd overall in the 15th round of the 2019 USHL Phase II draft by the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. He scored his 1st Career USHL Goal on October 20th in Tri-City's 4-2 over Cedar Rapids at the Viaero Center.

Nick Portz, 19, of St. Cloud, Minnesota is currently providing the Tri-City offense with a point per game through the first seven games of his career. Portz has one goal and six assists since his debut with the team on October 18th. Prior his debut in the USHL this season, Portz spent time with the Minnesota Wilderness in the NAHL and St. Cloud High School in St. Cloud, Minnesota. He served as the Alternate Captain in his seven games with the Wilderness prior to joining the Storm. Portz netted six goals and registered five assists in his time with the Wild this season after netting fourteen goals and recording eighteen assists with the team during the 2018-2019 regular season. During the 2017-2018 season, Portz scored twenty-three goals and recorded twenty-six assists in twenty-five games played with St. Cloud High School.

"The coaches at North Dakota are awesome, the tradition of the program is highly respected, and their facilities are top notch. Committing to play college hockey at the University of North Dakota was a pretty easy decision for me. After all the hard work, and the ups and downs, this is something very special for my family and I, and it hasn't really sunk in yet. Making the jump to the USHL has shown me how good everyone in this league is. You have to compete every night, and I look forward to continuing to do that" Nick Portz

"Nick is an honest, two-way winger, that makes plays and who's teammates love playing with. His story is kind of what this league is about. For him to go from where he was a few weeks ago to committing to North Dakota speaks volumes about our league. I give a ton of credit to the Minnesota Wilderness for allowing him to come here, and credit to him for taking full advantage of the opportunity." GM/Head Coach Anthony Noreen

Portz is set to become the ninth former Storm player to skate for the Fighting Hawks. Alumni of the Tri-City Storm program to play college hockey at the University of North Dakota include; Scott Foyt, Ratislav Spirko, Mario Lamoureaux, Mike Cichy, Austin Poganski, Chris Wilkie, Andrew Peski, and Shane Pinto.
