Ocean State Waves News Release
WAKEFIELD, R.I. - Caden Bailey hit a grand slam but Newport scored three runs in the seventh inning and earned a 5-4 victory over Ocean State on Saturday night at Old Mountain Field.
The Waves (16-12) have now lost back-to-back games and fall to 2-3 against the Gulls (17-8) this season.
Newport jumped out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in the fourth and fifth. In the fourth, Adrian English to start the inning and then scored on a wild pitch strikeout to Cody Jones with two outs in the inning. In the fifth, English delivered a two-out single through the left side to score Ben Roberts with the second run of the game.
Bailey changed the game with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the fifth. Chris King singled to start the inning and Michael Sherburne walked to put two runners on. Evan Ocello then drew a two-out walk to keep the inning alive for Bailey. Mark McCoy got ahead of Bailey 0-2 but hung a curveball and Bailey launched it to right field. The Gulls right fielder Roberts raced back to the wall and jumped over it but the ball ricocheted off the tip of his glove, giving Bailey his second home run of the season and the Waves 4-2 lead.
The lead held until the seventh when the Gulls rallied off of reliever Austin Hill. A single started the inning and Roberts followed with a game-tying two-run home run to right field. After a hit batter and a throwing error put runners on the corners, Ethan Ferriera's ground ball to third plated McKeithan with what would become the winning run.
Newport's trio of relievers, Joe Iorio, Sean Hartnett and Kyle Wilcox combined to throw four scoreless innings of relief. The Waves put two runners on in the ninth against Wilcox but the hard-throwing right-hander got a strikeout to end the game.
James Bessell was strong over five innings for the Waves. He allowed just two runs on nine hits and struck out three. Bessell stranded a pair of runners in each of the first three innings and got help from Mike Gerber in center as he threw out Ferriera trying to score from second on a single. Tom Bammann tossed a scoreless sixth and John Murray closed the game with two scoreless innings of relief. Bailey and McGraw each finished with two hits in the game.
The Waves finish their four-game homestand on Sunday when they host Laconia. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
