Bay Sox Stifled by Mystic
July 13, 2013 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
New Bedford Bay Sox News Release
New Bedford's eight hits, including a solo homer by Chris Shaw (Boston College) was not enough to beat Mystic as the Bay Sox suffered a 12-5 loss Saturday at Fitch High School.
The Bay Sox had a promising one-run lead heading into the bottom of the 8th until Mystic managed to score eight runs (three earned) aided by five straight singles.
Shaw led the way for the Bay Sox offense going 2 for 2 with three walks, 1 RBI, and 2 runs scored. Ryan Plourde (Fairfield) went 2 for 5 on the day with an RBI and a run scored.
Mystic ended the day with a total of 11 RBIs, including four from Brandon Cipolla (Holy Cross). Cipolla went 3 for 5 including a 3-run homer in the 7th. Anthony Turgeon (Central Connecticut) went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored.
Jeremy Perron (Holy Cross) received the loss for the Bay Sox; he recorded no outs and gave up 1 hit and 3 runs (2 earned). New Bedford used 4 pitchers throughout the 8 innings, striking out 6, and giving up a total of 15 hits and 12 runs (7 earned).
Schooner pitcher Connor Gleason received his 1st win of the season, pitching the final 1 1/3 innings of the game, striking out 1 and giving up 2 hits.
Shaw helped New Bedford get a lead early on with a solo home run, his 4th of the season, but Mystic managed to tie the game in the bottom of the 3rd off an RBI single by Alec Keller (Princeton).
The game stayed quiet until the bottom of the 7th with Cipolla's 3-run home run to give Mystic the lead.
Bay Sox stole back that lead in the 8th, scoring 4 runs off RBIs by Plourde, Lane Richards (Notre Dame), and Max Nogay (West Virginia).
New Bedford's lead was overthrown in the bottom of the 8th with Mystic's 8 run rally. The Schooners notched 5 straight singles from Matt O'Herron (Franklin Pierce), Nico Darras (Cal State Fullerton), Adam Touhey (Hartford), Billy Zolga (Fairfield), and Tyler Boyd (Seton Hall) to give Mystic their 12-5 lead and win.
The Bay Sox's record is now 9-18 and the Schooners are 15-11. New Bedford's next game is Sunday night on the road against Holyoke at 6:30.
