Burke Throws Complete Game Shutout

July 13, 2013 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Valley Blue Sox News Release

Holyoke, MA - Michael Burke has not only put on a show the last two times he has taken the mound but is starting to put together an All Star type of season.

Burke (2-0) put the Blue Sox in complete control en route to a 4-0 victory against the Sanford Mainers on Saturday night at Mackenzie Stadium.

The Cleveland, Ohio native threw nine innings while giving up no runs on five hits, walked one and struck out 11.

The 11 strikeouts marks a new season-high, the previous being eight which he did in his last start against New Bedford.

Burke has now thrown seven or more innings in a start five of the six times his name has been called to take the hill.

With the way Burke was pitching tonight the Blue Sox (13-13) didn't need much offense but provided some timely hits to help Burke out.

In the sixth and seventh inning the Blue Sox were finally able to break through on the scoreboard as Justin Morhardt scored on a balk making it 1-0 in the sixth.

Matt Reida would score later in the inning on an infield single by Vahn Bozoian making it 2-0.

The Blue Sox would tack on two more runs in the seventh off RBI singles from Jacob Bruce and Sal Annunziata driving in Joseph Carcone and Jake Bergren, respectively.

This made it 4-0, which would be the final dropping the Mainers to 11-15 overall in the 2013 season.

The Blue Sox are back in action on Sunday against the New Bedford Bay Sox at Mackenzie Stadium. The first 250 kids 12 years and younger will get a free temporary Blue Sox tattoo.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and first pitch is at 6:35 p.m.
