Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
PENSACOLA, FL- For the second straight game against Mississippi at home, the Ice Flyers won in a shootout. After defeating the Surge 6-5 on November 27, the Ice Flyers' Matt Whitehead buried a shootout-winning goal to give the Ice Flyers a 5-4 win on Friday night. The Ice Flyers had signed Whitehead only hours before the game.
Pensacola ended the first period leading 1-0. Lorne Misita found the puck in front of the net and scored at 5:16. Campbell and Buccella assisted on the play. The second period would belong to the Surge, however.
Just 34 seconds into the second period Velemirovich evaded Ryan Scott to tie the game at one apiece. But the Surge didn't stop there: with his parents in attendance, Jack Wolgemuth scored on an assist by Nick Klaren to put Mississippi up by one.
The back-and-forth game swung Pensacola's way 55 seconds into the third period. Lorne Misita scored his second goal of the game on a Dan Buccella pass to tie it up at two. 29 seconds later Matt Withers fired a shot in from the left point to give Pensacola a 3-2 lead. Rob Campbell picked up his second assist of the night in the process.
Once more Mississippi surged with two Matthew Larke goals: one at 2:54 and the other at 4:15. The 4-3 Surge lead held until 13:07 of the third period when Mark Hinz took a pass from Chris Rebernik and tied the game at four.
Regulation ended in a tie, as did the five minute overtime period, leading to a shootout to decide the game. Ryan Scott turned away Larke's solo attempt to setup Pensacola's Rob Campbell. Campbell thanked his goalie by slipping the puck past Ryan Senft and the Ice Flyers had the advantage. In fact, all four Surge shooters would miss, as would Anthony Monte and Chris Rebernik, bringing Matt Whitehead to center ice. The newest Ice Flyer started his approach, juked Senft, and found the back of the net to seal the Pensacola victory.
Pensacola returns to the Civic Center ice tomorrow for a 7:05 contest against the Columbus Cottonmouths. Fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food and teddy bears to the game: the food to donate before the game as part of the Manna Food Drive; the teddy bears to throw on the ice after the first Ice Flyers' goal. Ice Flyers officials will collect the Teddy Bear Toss bears from the ice, and the Ice Flyers will deliver them to Sacred Heart Children's Hospital on December 22.
Ice Flyers tickets are very affordable starting at just $10 for individuals, and as low as $8 for groups of ten or more.
