
Newcomb, M-Braves Win 7th Straight, Shutout Suns

Jacksonville, FL - Behind another strong outing from Sean Newcomb, the Mississippi Braves shut out the Jacksonville Suns 2-0 on Thursday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville to open a five-game series. It was the M-Braves' 7th consecutive win and their 20th out of the last 25.
Newcomb (6-7) hurled six shutout innings on two hits, walking three and striking out eight to pick up the win.
Mississippi (29-16; 63-51) got on the board in the fourth inning on a Willians Astudillo solo home run, his fourth of the year. It came on the first pitch of the fourth inning from starter Chris Mazza (4-4).
Astudillo came through again in the fifth with an RBI single to make it 2-0. Dansby Swanson drew a one-out walk, and Dustin Peterson singled to put two on for the run-scoring knock.
Mazza took the loss, allowing two runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings, walking four and striking out three.
Philip Pfeifer and Caleb Dirks came on in relief for the Braves and pitched a scoreless inning apiece, and David Peterson (S, 6) held the Suns (22-24; 52-64) off the board in the ninth to complete the shutout.
The Braves and Suns continue the series with the second of five games on Friday night at 6:05 PM CT, with left-hander Michael Mader (0-0, 0.00) set to make his Mississippi debut, taking on Suns left-hander Matt Tomshaw (2-3, 4.29).
