Newark Pilots News Release
NEWARK, NY - The Newark Pilots defeated the Geneva Red Wings 2-0 in a rain shortened, 5 inning contest. The win runs the Pilots winning streak up to 6 in a row, and runs their record to 17-26. The loss drops Geneva to 26-18. Peng-Fei Wang (Vanung, Taiwan) earned his first win, going 5 innings, surrendering 2 hits, 1 walk, and striking out 8. Winfred Nelson (Hilbert) took his first loss, also going 5, giving up 4 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, and striking out 3.
The two teams played to a scoreless first three innings. Wang struck out 5 and allowed just one base runner through the first three. Nelson allowed a man to get to second in each of the first three innings, but stranded the runner each time.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Pilots broke into the run column for the games only runs. After Will Allocca (Virginia) singled and stole second for this tenth stolen base of the year, Nelson got the next to batter he faced out. However, on the first pitch to Colton Carney (Seton Hill), he lined a single into left scoring Allocca. Carney took second on the throw, then stole third for his tenth stolen bag of the summer. He would come around to score on a Jonathan Parker (Jones County JC) single to give the Pilots a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Wang allowed a single to Jake Lyle (Volunteer State CC) to start the frame, but retired the next three batters in order (2 strikeouts) to end the threat. The Red Wings were 0-8 with runners in scoring position against Wang.
After the Pilots half of the fifth, the game went into a rain delay at Colburn Park. After about a 48 minute delay, the umpires came out and called the game, giving the Pilots a 2-0 victory.
