Newark wins 12-2 against the Pioneers

The Newark Pilots (15-13) defeated the Elmira Pioneers (11-17) 12-2 Sunday night at Colburn Park. Newark now leads the season series 5-2.
Newark displayed their offensive firepower in the bottom of the second inning as they scored five runs to take a 5-0 lead over Elmira. After getting the first three batters on base, Newark's starting third baseman Joe Landi (Univ. of Rhode Island) hit a double into left field that allowed Sean Osterman (St. John Fisher College) and Josh Perez (Mississippi College) the chance to cross home for the 2-0 lead. Newark again filled all of the bases as Brent Langston clear them with his own double to left field. His hit allowed Josh Crowdus (Delta State), Cash Barker (Texas A&M Kingsville), and Austin Logan (UC Davis) to score for the 5-0 lead.
The Pilots added another run in the following inning. The second baseman, Perez flied out to center for the sacrifice, allowing Osterman to get home for the second time of the game. That run gave them a 6-0 lead.
Elmira finally took to the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. With a man on third and one out, Spencer Brann (UC Davis) flied out to the warning track in right-center, allowing the right fielder Clark Wise (Wofford) to score on the sacrifice. That run cut the score to 6-1, Newark. In the top of the seventh, the team added their last run of the game. Kendall Konopka (Arizona Chirstian) singled in Corey Hamula (Sullivan County CC). It wasn't Elmira's night as the Pilots went on to add a total of six more runs in the bottom of the sixth, seventh inning, and eighth innings giving them a 12-2 lead.
Elira's Konopka and Hamula combined for three of the team's four hits. Konopka had one of the team's RBI while Hamula was one of the scoring runners. Newark's three through seven hitters provided the offense for the team tonight. Langston, Adam Grace (Erie CC), Osterman, Perez, and Landi combined nine of the team's 10 hits, while combining for 11 of their 12 runs.
Derek Dallas (UT-Dallas) pitched effectively, earning his second win of the season. The righty was almost unhittable in his seven innings of work as he only gave up two hits and one earned run; he also struck out two while walking one batter. Justin Bhatti (Norfolk State) started for the Pioneers, as he took the loss for the team. The righty pitched five and two-third innings and gave up eight hits, seven earned runs while striking out and walking two.
Newark will be home again at Colburn Park Monday night as they will host the Watertown Wizards for a game time start of 7:05 p.m. The Pioneers will travel back to Elmira as they will host Mohawk Valley Monday night at Duffy Fairgrounds for a game time start of 7:05 p.m.
