Newark Sweeps Double Header against Cooperstown

The Newark Pilots (5-5) swept the Cooperstown Hawkeyes (6-5) in their doubleheader matchup at Colburn Park on Thursday night. The Pilots won game one 5-1, while defeating the Hawkeyes 8-4 in the finale of the doubleheader.
Newark 5, Cooperstown 1
Newark jumped out the gate early as they tacked on 5 runs in the first three innings of Game 1 of the double-header. In the bottom of the first inning Sam Fox (Pomona-Pitzer) singled to right field allowing Jeff Edwards (Valparasio) to score from second base.
The Pilots added four more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Fox contributed again with his second run batted in as he singled through the right side. Max Rosing (Cortland) capped off the inning with his three run homer that was sent towering over the left field scoreboard. Fox and Edwards both scored on the home run.
The Hawkeyes looked to cause some damage as they added a run and had a bases loaded opportunity in the top of the sixth inning. Cameron Day (Norfolk State) provided Cooperstown's only run with an RBI single that allowed Brendan O'Reilly (New Haven) to score. The Hawkeyes eventually loaded the bases with one out in the inning, but their threat came to end as Nolan Ray (Kentucky Wesleyan) lined out to short-stop for inning ending unassisted double play.
Drew Hasler (Valaparaiso) earned his first win of the season for the Pilots, brining his season record to 1-1. The righty threw a complete game, as he allowed one earned run on nine hits. He issued no walks and struck out one batter. Jonathan Chudy (Pace) earned his second loss of the season, extending his record to 0-2. The righty pitched a complete allowing five earned runs on eight hits. The Hawkeye walked one batter while striking out 5 Pilots.
The Pilots' Fox and Rosing led Newark, combining to bat in all five runs. Steve Laurino (Marsit) tied fox with a team high two hits.
Cooperstown's Ben Hall (Central Alabama CC) and Day combined for five hits and one run batted in for the team.
Newark 8, Cooperstown 4
The Pilots' took flight starting off the game, as they scored the first three runs of the game courtesy of a Lance Hamilton (University of Rochester) RBI in the bottom of the second inning. Newark tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 3-0. Steve Laurino (Marist) singled in Max Rosing (Cortland).
The home team added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, building their lead to 5-0 over the Hawkeyes. With runners on second and third, Coleman Lukas (Pomona-Pitzer) grounded a ball to the second baseman that was botched allowing Scott Matthews (Washington College) and Josh Ludwig (University of Rochester) to score.
The Hawkeyes broke the shutout in the top of the sixth inning. Second baseman Ben Hall (Central Alabama CC) smashed a double to right field that scored Brendan O'Reilly (New Haven). With one out and bases loaded, Ryan Donovan (Hofstra) grounded out to shortstop that allowed Hall to score. Stefan Jordan (NC A&T) followed with his own two RBI hit, scoring
Leading 5-4, Newark tacked on three more runs to extend their lead 8-4. Marshall Harden (University of Penn.) doubled in Joe Simmons (Finger Lakes CC) and Matthews. With two outs, Lukas added to the lead with his second RBI of the game, scoring Harden.
Ryan Gray (Trinity) earned his first win of the season for Newark as he pitched two innings of relief. The righty surrendered one earned run on two hits while striking out two and walking one. Collin Belk (Kirkwood CC) earned his first loss of the season for the Hawkeyes as he worked three innings. The righty gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits.
Rosing, Harden, Lukas, and Hamilton combined for seven hits, four runs, and batted in all eight runs for the Pilots. Hall, Donovan, and Jordan combined for five hits, one run, while batting in all four of Cooperstown's runs. Newark will be on the road Friday night, as they travel to Elmira to face the Pioneers at Dunn Field Stadium for a scheduled game time of 6:00 pm. As for Cooperstown, they will return home to Doubleday Field to host the Adirondack Trail Blazers for scheduled 5:00 pm game time.
