Newark Pilots News Release
The Newark Pilots' (16-10) fell to Elmira 5-4 on Wednesday at Colburn in an extra-innings contest. Newark saw its four-game winning streak come to an end in its first extra innings game of the season. The Pilots have now dropped all four they've against the Pioneers in the 2016 series.
The Pilots fell behind early after the first six hitters for Elmira reached base, which led to four runs crossing the plate off starter Ryan Wesson (Northeast Miss. C.C.). After the rocky first, Wesson (2-2)would settle into a groove working the next 4 1/3 innings without allowing a run.
"He had to battle, but he got through that first inning," Pilots head coach Chris Edmondson said of Wesson's performance. "After that he settled in and started to get quick outs, which was exactly what we needed to stay on the ballgame."
Trailing 4-0 in the fourth, Greg Cullen (Niagara) would lead-off with a double down the left field line and he would later score an RBI single from Bo-Hao Huang (Fu Jen Catholic). Acy Owen (Hinds C.C.) would drive home Huang to make the score 4-2.
The Pilots would add two more runs on RBI singles from Mark Tumosa (UMass-Lowell) and Chris Sharpe (UMass-Lowell) to completely erase what was once a four-run deficit.
"They've shown they can come from behind all year," Edmondson said. "We've come from behind all year and won games. The guys have good approaches that stay the same no matter the situation and that always helps."
Reliever Tysen Fischlin (Skagit Valley C.C.) would load the bases in the eighth, but would get of the inning unharmed after inducing a flyout from Tyler Plantier (UCSD). Fischlin worked 3 1/3 innings of scoreless ball out of the Newark bullpen to bring the game to extra innings.
In the 10th, Rob Perteet (Samford) would plate an unearned run on a bloop-single to left field to give Elmira the 5-4 lead. The Pilots could not get a run across in the bottom of the inning as the Pioneers closer, Parker Caracci (Ole Miss) closed out the victory.
These two teams will meet again in Elmira on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. for game five of the season series.
