Newark Pilots News Release
The Newark Pilots dropped Friday's Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League West Division playoff game against the Cooperstown Hawkeyes 6-2. The Hawkeyes lead the three-game series 1-0.
The Hawkeyes scored twice in the first inning without recording hit. Danny Nelson (Cal State Monterey Bay) walked to start the inning and a two-base error put Nelson on third and Ben Miller (Shippensburg) on second. Two consecutive sacrifice flies drove in the two runs. The game was quiet until the top of the sixth when the Pilots cut the lead to 2-1. Kyle Attl (Cal State Northridge) loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. Cooperstown starter Tyler Broome (USC Sumter) then hit Adam Grace (Genesee C.C.) to force home Michael Bolling (Lewis).
Cooperstown broke the game open in the seventh with an inside-the-park grand slam. With the bases full, Miller hit the ball to deep left-center field. Newark outfielders Bolling and Luke Swenson (UC Santa Barbara) collided while attempting to make the catch, allowing the ball to roll to the wall and giving Miller time to round the bases.
Both Bolling and Swenson were taken to the Bassett Health Center in Cooperstown for precautionary measures and were later released without any serious injuries.
Attl again was hit by a pitch to load the bases in the eighth, this time with no outs. Grace struck out before Shayne Herold (Ashland) hit an RBI single. The rally was killed when Greg Schworm (Finger Lakes C.C.) grounded into a 4-6-3 double play.
Broome pitched six innings, surrendering just one run while fanning six. Luke Burns (Hudson Valley C.C.) and J.P. Sportman (Central Connecticut State) each had two hits to lead Cooperstown.
Carson Beauchaine (Saginaw Valley State) allowed five runs in six and one-third innings. Bolling, Ray Delvalle (Kentucky Wesleyan) and Jacob Starnes (UT Dallas) each had two hits. The Pilots left 11 runners on base.
The Cooperstown Hawkeyes travel to Newark to face the Pilots in Game 2 of the West Divisional Series on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Also on Saturday, the East Divisional Series will continue as the Amsterdam Mohawks, winners of Game 1, will host the Glens Falls Golden Eagles.
