Newark brings the fireworks, defeating Utica 5-3

Newark NY, July 4th, 2013 -- During the only Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) action of the night, the Newark Pilots (10-15) defeat the Utica Brewers (9-11) 5-3 at Colburn Park. This Pilot win breaks a three game win streak for the Brewers.

Drew Hasler (2-2, Valparaiso) earned his second win of the season pitching 6 2/3 innings, allowing only one earned run while striking out a game-high five batters. The bullpen was clicking as Joe Pokrentowski (Saint Rose), Jimmy Wagner (Ithaca) and closer Donald Frew (Young Harris) allowed a combined one hit. Frew successfully recorded his fifth save of the season.

The first score of the game came in the third inning as the Pilots brought three in to score. Taylor Hinshaw recorded the first RBI (Georgia College) on a sacrifice fly to left field. David Vandercook (Columbia) followed with a triple bringing home Steve Laurino and Jacob Russell (University of Kentucky).

The Brewers responded with a run of their own in the top of the fourth. With a man on second, Michael McClellan (Georgia Southern) singled to center field. Utica scored again in the sixth inning on a solo home run by Michael Pierson (Appalachian State).

Utica Brewers pitcher Eric Brothers (0-2, Sioux Falls) started the game allowing seven hits and five runs over 3 2/3 innings before being replaced by Ryan Butzer (Davenport University).
