Red Bull New York News Release
RED BULLS GET REST WITH BYE WEEK: The New York Red Bulls will enjoy their first bye week of the season after finishing a stretch in which they played six of seven on the road. The Red Bulls have already played 19 games this season, two more than D.C. United and three more than seven other teams in MLS.
New York wrapped up a three-game road swing with a 2-1 loss to FC Dallas at Pizza Hut Park last Saturday. The Red Bulls will now play six of their next seven games at home at Giants Stadium. Their next match is on Thursday, July 16 when they welcome Designated Player David Beckham, U.S. National Team standout Landon Donovan and the Los Angeles Galaxy to the Meadowlands, with kickoff set for 8:00 PM ET (TV: Fox Soccer Channel; Radio: WADO 1280 AM). The Red Bulls are 2-3-3 at Giants Stadium this season with a +2 goal differential. Their last home match was on June 20 - a 1-1 tie against Seattle Sounders FC.
CREDENTIAL INFORMATION FOR GALAXY MATCH: Media members who are interested in applying for credentials for the Red Bulls-Los Angeles Galaxy match on Thursday, July 16, must do so by Tuesday, July 14 at 5:00 PM ET. Applications may be sent via e-mail to brian.tsao@newyorkredbulls.com or faxed to the Red Bulls Communications Department at 201.583.7055. Applications submitted after the deadline will not be accepted.
RED BULLS FALL 2-1 TO FC DALLAS: Two Jeff Cunningham first half goals within two minutes helped give FC Dallas a 2-1 win over the New York Red Bulls at Pizza Hut Park Saturday night. Red Bulls forward Juan Pablo Angel tallied the lone goal for the visitors. The loss wrapped up a three-game road trip for the Red Bulls and dropped them to 2-13-4 (10 pts.) this season.
In a wide-open first half, FC Dallas earned the first chance of the game when midfielder David Ferreira streaked through the center of the field four minutes in and found an on-rushing Cunningham in the penalty box. He rifled an attempt that was caught by New York goalkeeper Danny Cepero. Four minutes later, Angel passed it to an open Nick Zimmerman in the right side of the penalty box and his one-time volley from 12-yards-out was held by Ray Burse.
The Hoops nearly found the back of the net in the 11th minute. Drew Moor hit a cross towards the top of the six-yard box that swerved to an open Ferreira, whose header went straight at Cepero.
FC Dallas put their name on the scoresheet four minutes later. Midfielder Luke Sassano tried to back pass it in the Red Bulls' half between two Red Bulls defenders. Cunningham intercepted it at the top of the penalty box and took the ball towards goal, before knocking it past Cepero and into the back of the net.
Less than two minutes later, the Hoops doubled their advantage. Former Red Bulls midfielder Dave van den Bergh had the ball on the right wing and cut to his left foot, before hitting a cross into the box that found an open Cunningham, who slid it in from close range.
The Red Bulls tried to fight back after going down, 2-0. Forward Matthew Mbuta was able to unleash a left-footed cross in the 20th minute that was headed over the bar by Jorge Rojas. Nine minutes later, Rojas tested Burse with a powerful left-footed volley from 20-yards-out that the goalkeeper could only tip over the bar. After the ensuing corner kick, Danleigh Borman swung it to Andrew Boyens and he headed it high.
New York kept knocking on the door in the first half, tallying eight shots - six of which were on goal. Rojas was active in the Red Bulls' attack, and created New York's best chance up to that point when he threaded a pass through the center of the field to an onside Mbuta, who only had Burse to beat. Mbuta tried to round the goalkeeper, but Burse was able to get his foot out and poke it away.
Moments later, however, New York pulled one back. Rojas had the ball at the top of the box and found a streaking Borman on the left wing. Borman took the ball towards the end line and crossed it to Angel, who knocked it inside the left post for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
After the intermission, both teams had chances to score. Ferreira again came close in the 57th minute when he got a piece on a headed down Brek Shea pass, but Cepero was there to gobble it up. Three minutes later, Zimmerman had a go from 22 yards out that went off the outer portion of the side netting. Cepero was called upon again in the 67th minute, as he pushed away an Eric Avila shot.
With 15 minutes left to play, New York nearly had a chance to tie the game. Angel dispossessed Dax McCarty in FC Dallas' half and he slid it to Sinisa Ubiparipovic on the right. Ubiparipovic tried to find an on-rushing Rojas in the box but the Venezuelan was steps away from getting there. Cunningham had a goal disallowed with 10 minutes left when he was ruled offsides after knocking in a Cepero rebound from an Avila attempt.
The Red Bulls used their final substitution in the 79th minute, bringing on forward John Wolyniec for Zimmerman and he almost tied the game in the 83rd minute. Wolyniec played a give-and-go with Angel before he made enough space to hit a left-footed shot that Burse dove to push away. Moments after, Ferreira was close to icing the result when he got behind the Red Bulls and forced Cepero to make an acrobatic swat from close range.
The Red Bulls traveled only 15 players to Frisco with Albert Celades (hamstring), Kevin Goldthwaite (groin), Macoumba Kandji (hamstring), Carlos Mendes (hamstring) all out due to injury. Alfredo Pacheco (El Salvador) and Dane Richards (Jamaica) missed Saturday's showdown, as they were competing in the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Borman left the game in the 49th minute with a left ankle sprain.

RICHARDS/PACHECO PARTAKE IN GOLD CUP: Red Bulls Alfredo Pacheco and Dane Richards missed New York's 2-1 loss to FC Dallas on Saturday, as they were with their respective national teams for the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Pacheco played the full 90 minutes in El Salvador's defense during their 2-1 win over Costa Rica on Friday, July 3. Richards and the Jamaican National Team weren't as successful, falling to Canada, 1-0 at The Home Depot Center. Richards was on the bench but did not play. El Salvador will take on Canada on July 7 in Columbus, OH before facing Jamaica on July 10 in Miami, FL.
Should either team advance, the quarterfinals are scheduled for July 18-19 in Philadelphia and Dallas with the semifinals taking place on July 23 in Chicago and the final being on July 26 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.
Richards has played in 14 games, starting in 10 of them, and has one goal and one assist for the Red Bulls this season. Richards has 12 appearances with the Jamaican National Team, his first coming in 2002 at the age of 18. He has yet to score a goal for the National Team, but at the end of 2008, Richards played an integral part in helping Jamaica capture the 2008 Digicel Caribbean Cup.
Pacheco joined the Red Bulls on April 15, 2009 and has played and started in 12 games for New York. He was called up to the El Salvador National Team earlier this month for their 2010 World Cup Qualifying matches and has earned 68 caps for his country. Prior to signing with the Red Bulls, Pacheco was with C.D. FAS of the Salvadorian First Division.
PETKE RETUNS: Red Bulls defender Mike Petke returned to the Starting XI after missing the last three games due to suspension. The Major League Soccer Disciplinary Committee suspended Petke two games and fined him $500 on Tuesday, June 22 for inappropriate conduct and comments made toward the officiating crew at the Red Bulls June 13 game versus Toronto FC. The suspension and fine were in addition to the automatic one-game suspension he received for being issued a red card and the automatic fine of $750 levied for his two cautions, which resulted in his ejection. Petke's suspension totaled three games and his fine totaled $1,250.
WOLYNIEC IN THIRD: Red Bulls forward John Wolyniec is moving up the games played chart for New York. Wolyniec came on as a substitute against FC Dallas on Saturday, July 4 and made his 131st appearance, taking sole possession of third place. He is just one appearance shy of tying Jeff Parke for second. Teammate Mike Petke is the club's all-time leader in games played (144) and starts (138).

RED BULLS PEN COUNDOUL: Red Bull New York announced on June 29 that it signed goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul to a new contract after the Red Bulls acquired his MLS rights from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for allocation money. The club also announced that it has terminated goalkeeper Jon Conway's contract.
"We believe that Bouna has a bright future ahead of him and can immediately strengthen the squad with his ability and experience," said Red Bull New York Sporting Director Jeff Agoos. "We would also like to thank Jon for his long-standing service to the club and wish him the best of luck."
Coundoul, who hails from Bronx, NY, and attended Martin Luther King Jr. High School in New York City before playing for the University at Albany for two seasons (2002-2004), started training with the Red Bulls the week of June 15. Coundoul signed with the Rapids during the 2005 season and did not see first team action. Since then, Coundoul, 27, made 52 appearances over the next three seasons, posting an 1.16 goals against average - a mark which is second all-time in MLS history for goalkeepers who have played a minimum of 4,000 minutes. In 2007, Coundoul played in a career-high 30 games, missing only 32 minutes of action, and earned nine shutouts en route to a 1.08 goals against average - third best in MLS. The 6-2, 197-pound goalkeeper has tallied 16 shutouts in his career. He has not seen action in MLS this season.
Coundoul has earned two caps for the senior Senegalese National Team and was part of the side's African Cup of Nations squad. He won the Rapids' U.S. Soccer Foundation Humanitarian of the Year award for his charitable efforts in Senegal in 2007.
Conway, 32, was in the midst of his fourth season with the Red Bulls, posting a 1.78 goals against average in nine starts. Last season, Conway started in a career-high 28 games, recording a 1.50 goals against average and seven shutouts. He was acquired by New York from the San Jose Earthquakes on Dec. 5, 2005, in exchange for New York's natural fourth round pick in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft. The former Rutgers University product played in a total of 81 games for New York.
PIETRAVALLO, NY PART WAYS: Red Bull New York announced on June 26 that it terminated midfielder Juan Pietravallo's contract.
"I want to thank Juan for his contribution to the club," said Sporting Director Jeff Agoos. "This was a very difficult decision for us, but we believe it was the best move for both parties. We want to wish Juan the best of luck."
Pietravallo, 27, has played in three games this season for New York, starting in two. He was signed by the Red Bulls last season on July 17 and featured in 13 games - 12 of which were starts. Pietravallo recorded one assist.
RED BULLS-FC DALLAS POST-GAME: Here was the reaction after the Red Bulls-FC Dallas match on July 4:
NEW YORK RED BULLS HEAD COACH JUAN CARLOS OSORIO
Thoughts on the game:
We were pretty much the same the first fifteen minutes. Then they got a chance. We gave the ball away in a very bad area and they capitalized on that. Then we allowed a second goal in less than three minutes. It was a mountain to climb but we fought back and made a couple adjustments and I think we created enough chances to at least tie the game.
On getting a goal right before the half:
Just before that we had Matthew Mbuta one v. one with the goalkeeper and we didn't get anything out of that effort. We think we got at least one goal in the first half and in the second half we just went for it and unfortunately it didn't pay it off.
On what is going wrong this season:
A lot of things have gone wrong. In many different decisions and many different ways, it just seems like we don't get any breaks. We have just had a very poor season.
NEW YORK RED BULLS MIDFIELDER SETH STAMMLER
Thoughts on the game:
Obviously, we are going through a tough time right now. This result doesn't help. I think we showed some character getting the first goal back and it seemed like we were going to get another one. Couple mishaps in the back and we're down 2-0 pretty early, so we had a big hill to climb back.
On whether heat was a factor:
Sure, it was hot out there but I thought it was a burden for both teams. I think it caused the game to opened up. Both teams were having trouble.
On the team's road troubles:
We always talk about defending first. If the team has a zero or one goal maximum, we are going to have a good chance obviously with Juan on top and the other forwards that we have. It starts with defense and hopefully that creates some good offensive chances for us.
NEW YORK RED BULLS FORWARD JUAN PABLO ANGEL
Thoughts on the game:
I think there was not much difference between the two sides. I think it was a good performance by both but, at the end of the day, they got their chances; they took them and won the game.
On his goal right before the end of the first half:
We really thought that with that goal we were back in the game. It was one of those goals that set you up well for the second half. It was right at the end of the first half. Unfortunately, we could not capitalize on the chances that we had in the second half. They had their chances too and, at the end of the day, took them all night.
On whether he was one hundred percent:
If we weren't in the situation that we are in now, I wouldn't have played today. That doesn't mean anything because, at the end of the day, when you step out on the field, you don't make excuses about anything. I am responsible for my own performance. I have never been in a situation like this in my entire career especially at this level. We only had 13 field players in the squad which I find shocking, but I guess that is the way it is. Obviously there is something we are doing something wrong here. You can't be at this level. I am not happy when we don't have sufficient players on the bench to fill up the squad.
On playing against FC Dallas midfielder Dave van den Bergh for the first time since he was traded:
Dave is a great lad. I get on really well with him. He's part of the game. People move on. When he was with New York, he gave us his best. He was a great friend of mine. He is a quality player. I wish him well.
