Red Bull New York News Release

BULLS RETURN FOR FOUR-GAME HOME SWING: After playing four games in the span of 10 days, the New York Red Bulls return to Giants Stadium, where they will kick off a four game homestand. The Red Bulls will start this swing on Friday, as they host the San Jose Earthquakes at 7:30 PM ET (TV: MSG; Radio: WQBU 92.7 FM).

New York is coming off a 1-0 loss at the hands of the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday night at The Home Depot Center. Having played five of their eight matches away from home, the Red Bulls host an Earthquakes side that is winless in their last five matches - falling to Chivas USA, 1-0, on Saturday at Buck Shaw Stadium thanks to a 53rd minute Justin Braun goal. Currently in seventh place in the Western Conference with a 1-4-2 (5 pts.) record, San Jose's only win of the season was a 3-2 victory on March 28 over the Houston Dynamo.

This will be the second time in 10 days that the Red Bulls and Earthquakes will square off. On Wednesday, April 29, the Red Bulls earned a 2-1 away win over the Earthquakes in a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Play-In game. New York went ahead via a Mike Petke second minute goal, but San Jose forward Pablo Campos tied it up in the 71st minute. The Red Bulls earned the lead for good nine minutes later when John Wolyniec put home a Dominic Oduro cross. New York will face D.C. United on May 20 at RFK Stadium at 7 PM ET to determine which team will qualify for the tournament's Round of 16.

Arturo Alvarez and Ryan Johnson both have two goals apiece to lead the Earthquakes while former Red Bull defender Chris Leitch, who was acquired by San Jose on March 2, 2009, for allocation money and an international slot, has a team-high three assists.

New York won last year's season series against San Jose, earning a 1-0-1 record. On April 26, the Red Bulls got goals from Mike Magee and Jozy Altidore, as they pulled out a 2-0 win at Giants Stadium. In the return game at Buck Shaw Stadium on July 27, the two teams played to a 1-1 tie after an Eric Denton own goal and a Darren Huckerby tally. The Red Bulls are 7-13-6 all-time against the Earthquakes and are unbeaten in all competitions in their last three against San Jose (2-0-1).

Since New York's loss to Colorado at Giants Stadium on 6/30/2004, the club has not been beaten in the first home match following a West Coast trip (Chivas USA, L.A. Galaxy, San Jose Earthquakes, Seattle Sounders FC). New York's record is 4-0-7 in those matches.

RED BULLS LOSE 1-0 TO GALAXY: A Landon Donovan first half penalty kick goal helped give the Los Angeles Galaxy (1-1-4, 7 pts.) a 1-0 win over the New York Red Bulls in front of 21,006 fans at The Home Depot Center Saturday night. With the loss, the Red Bulls fell to 1-5-2 (5 pts.) on the season.

The first half saw few chances, with both teams trying to make their mark on the game. New York's first opportunity came 14 minutes in when defender Alfredo Pacheco tested Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts from long range, but Ricketts held onto the shot. Three minutes later, an Eddie Lewis free kick nearly found an outstretched Gregg Berhalter in the six yard box as the ball flew out of bounds.

The Red Bulls came close in the 23rd minute. Off a Jorge Rojas corner, defender Kevin Goldthwaite was able to get a toe on the ball and forced Ricketts to make a diving stop. Soon after, Los Angeles midfielder Dema Kovalenko slipped the ball through to Chris Klein, whose short angle shot was caught by New York goalkeeper Jon Conway.

Los Angeles took the lead in the 39th minute with the match's lone goal. Donovan had possession on the right side of the penalty box and his cross bounced off midfielder Seth Stammler. Linesman Frank Anderson waved his flag, indicating that Stammler handled the ball in the box and referee Abiodun Okulaja awarded the Galaxy a penalty kick, which Donovan slotted past Conway to put the hosts up, 1-0.

In the second half, the Red Bulls brought on Albert Celades in the 59th minute and Danleigh Borman in the 66th minute for Sinisa Ubiparipovic and Pacheco, respectively. Celades made his first appearance for New York after missing the last three games due to a left hamstring strain. The Galaxy tried to stretch their lead in the 74th minute when a Klein cross found Edson Buddle, but his header went over the bar. Later, Lewis put in a shot that Conway saved. The rebound fell to Donovan, who put it into the stands. Conway made four saves on the night.

During second half stoppage time, Red Bulls substitute John Wolyniec was almost put in on goal after muscling his way through to the penalty box. However, Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez made a last second tackle before Wolyniec got a shot off.
