New York Red Bulls Forward Juan Pablo Ãngel Named MLS Player of the Week
Published on August 2, 2010 under Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release
NEW YORK (Aug. 2, 2010) - New York Red Bulls forward Juan Pablo Ãngel was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 18 of the 2010 MLS season. Ãngel scored both goals in the Red Bulls 2-2 draw against the Houston Dynamo on Saturday, July 31, at Robertson Stadium.
Ãngel struck early to give his team a one-goal advantage early in the match. In the 10th minute, Red Bulls forward Thierry Henry cleverly maneuvered the ball down the left sideline and sent a cross into the six-yard box for Ãngel, who placed on a point-blank shot past Dynamo goalkeeper Tally Hall.
With the game tied 1-1, Ãngel and Henry again connected to give the Red Bulls the lead. In the 58th minute, Henry fed a ball from the center of the field behind the Houston defense for Ãngel sprinting into the area. Ãngel took one touch and sent a right-footed shot across the goal into the left side of the net for his second of the night.
With 11 goals this season, the Red Bulls forward currently sits in second place in the Budweiser Golden Boot standings, just one goal behind the LA Galaxy's Edson Buddle.
Ãngel has been named Player of the Week twice this season (Week 13, Week 18). This is his fifth career Player of the Week award: 2007 - Week 7, Week 19; 2008 - Week 20; 2010 - Week 13, Week 18.
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com/.
