New York Falls to Columbus Crew, 3-1

HARRISON, NJ (May 20, 2010) - Despite creating a number of scoring opportunities and hitting the goal frame three times, the New York Red Bulls dropped their third-straight match with a 3-1 loss to the Columbus Crew at Red Bull Arena Thursday night. The defeat dropped the Red Bulls, who outshot the Crew, 19-10, to 5-4-0 on the season, as New York is now in second place for the first time this season with 15 points. Red Bulls rookie Tony Tchani tallied his first career MLS goal in the loss.

Juan Pablo Angel nearly opened his account for the Red Bulls 11 minutes into the first half - an interval in which the Red Bulls controlled much of the possession. Seth Stammler passed it to New York's captain and he dribbled by a defender before hitting it just past the left post.

Despite not challenging the Red Bulls' goal for much of the evening's opening stages, Columbus took the lead in the 35th minute. Off a throw-in, Frankie Hejduk gathered the ball by the right touchline and found an open Eddie Gaven, who nodded it past goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul.

New York had a golden opportunity to equalize soon after the restart when Sinisa Ubiparipovic got free in the right side of the penalty box and blasted a shot that beat Columbus goalkeeper Will Hesmer, but slammed off the left post.

That missed opportunity came to hurt the Red Bulls in the 39th minute, when the visitors extended their lead. Gaven swung in a corner kick and Andy Iro rose above his defender to head it into the back of the net.

The Red Bulls nearly brought the deficit back to one five minutes after halftime. Iro tried to clear the ball from his own defensive end and couldn't connect, giving forward Dane Richards space with only Hesmer to beat. With Iro on his back, Richards rolled a shot past Hesmer and off the left post. Soon after, Crew midfielder Adam Moffat swung and turned in a shot from six yards out that Coundoul caught.

The woodwork was unkind to the Red Bulls for the third time in the match in the 60th minute. After Richards won a free kick from 22-yards-out, Angel's ensuing attempt on goal pinged off the crossbar. The Red Bulls kept pushing and seven minutes later, Richards had a step on his man at the top of the 18-yard box and Hesmer came out to deflect his shot away.

New York had the brunt of the chances in the second half and Tchani came close in the 71st minute, getting free on the back post off a corner kick but not getting a good connection on his volley. Crew forward Steven Lenhart almost gave the Red Bulls their first goal of the night, flicking in an Angel cross that nearly found the back of his own net.

The hosts finally broke through in the 81st minute. Substitute Carlos Mendes lofted a high ball into the box and Hesmer came off his line. Tchani won his header and knocked it into the empty net to make the game 2-1.

Columbus quickly grabbed the lead back two minutes later. A long ball was played into New York's defensive third and hit off defender Tim Ream. Emilio Renteria went in alone on goal off the deflection, rounded Coundoul and finished the scoring for the night.

New York's Mike Petke became the 12th player in MLS history to appear in 300 regular season games with his start on Thursday night while defender Chris Albright made his first regular season appearance as a Red Bull. Albright made his 200th MLS regular season appearance Thursday.
