New York City FC Win Campeones Cup 2022

September 15, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release

NEW YORK - In its fourth edition of the 2022 Campeones Cup, New York City FC defeated Atlas FC of LIGA MX 2-0 in a stellar team performance at Yankee Stadium. With notable contributions from Talles Magno, Maximiliano Moralez and Nicolas Acevedo, NYCFC became the third MLS team in tournament history to win the Campeones Cup, joining Columbus Crew (2021) and Atlanta United (2019) in a row.

The reigning MLS Cup champions got on the scoreboard early through defender Alexander Callens' fourth minute goal. Nicolas Acevedo beat the Atlas goalkeeper to Gabriel Pereira's free kick to redirect the ball for Callens to tap into an open net. NYCFC held onto their one-goal lead all the way to half time.

It took just four minutes of action in the second half for NYCFC to double their lead over Atlas, this time through talismanic midfielder Maximiliano Moralez. A smooth bit of combination play between Talles Magno and Santiago Rodríguez carved open Atlas' defense, allowing Magno to play Moralez into space before the Argentine midfielder slotted NYCFC's second goal into the bottom corner of the net.

Tonight's Campeones Cup victory was the first title won under interim head coach Nick Cushing and the club's first since winning the 2021 MLS Cup. They are the third MLS Eastern Conference team to win the Campeones Cup since its inaugural match in 2018 following Atlanta and Columbus.
