
New Record Set for Hits Against Capitals

The Calgary Vipers set a new franchise record for hits allowed in a game with 26 against as they were defeated 20-5 by the Edmonton Capitals before 1852 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Edmonton scored eight runs in the first inning and added six more in the third frame to put the game away early. With the loss the Vipers avoid sweeping the Capitals and fall to 37-17 overall and 11-4 in the second half. Both totals remain the Golden Baseball League best and North Division best as well.
Trevor Caughey (2-3) took the win throwing six innings and giving up 11 hits for four runs. Travis Hughes threw a scoreless inning out of the bullpen for Calgary while striking out two. Erik Dessau (6-2) took the loss in getting chased from the game in the first inning and giving up eight runs.
For the second straight game Edmonton took a big lead in the top of the first inning as Jorge Cortes and Mark Okano both doubled for a run, Joey Gomes hit a home run, Walter Young singled, Carlos Duncan hit a home run, Chad Ehrnsberger doubled, Aaron Hornostaj walked, Matt Ceriani doubled in two, and Cortes singled in another for a 8-0 advantage.
The Capitals added to the lead in the second as with two outs Duncan singled and Ehrnsberger and Hornostaj hit back-to-back run batted in doubles for a 10- lead.
Edmonton's onslaught continued in the third frame as Cortes doubled, Darryl Brinkley singled in one, Gomes reached on an error, Young doubled in one, Duncan doubled in two, Ehrnseberger also doubled in one, and Ceriani singled in a sixth for a 16-0 advantage.
Calgary got into the scoring in the bottom of the inning as Fehlandt Lentini smacked his eighth home run of the season, Nelson Castro doubled, Jorge Mejia grounded out to move Castro to third, and Colin Moro hit a RBI sacrifice fly for a 16-2 score.
A run was added to the Capitals lead in the fourth as Okano singled, Brinkley reached on a fielder's choice, and Young doubled in one for a 17-2 game.
The Vipers got another pair of runs in the sixth frame as Drew Miller and Ivan Reyes singled followed by RBI base hits from Castro and Mejia later in the inning to trim the deficit to 15 runs at 17-4.
Edmonton got a run back in the top of the seventh inning as Gomes hit a solo home run for a 18-4 lead.
Dillon O'Krane hit his second home run of the year for Calgary in the eighth inning for a 18-5 score.
In the ninth again the Capitals scored two more runs for a 20-5 advantage when Mitch Graham singled, Duncan reached on a fielder's choice, Hornostaj singled, and following a wild pitch Ceriani plated two with a base hit.
The Vipers now hit the road for a three-game series in Tucson against the Toros on Tuesday July 28th, Wednesday July 29th, and Thursday July 30th all at 7:00 PM MDT. Calgary will send Dallas Mahan (2-2, 2.15), Reggie Rivard (3-3, 4.78), and Erik Dessau (6-2) to the mound for the three games.
Calgary returns home to Foothills Stadium on Tuesday August 4th at 7:05 PM MDT, Wednesday August 5th at 5:05 PM MDT for a double-header and Thursday August 6th at 7:05 PM MDT against the Tucson Toros for a four-games-in-three-days series. On Thursday it will be the final Dog Days of Summer with dog toys handed out at the front gate while it will also be Grey Eagle Casino night at the park with even more free giveaways.
