New Orleans Holds On With 5-3 Win

Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

One night after hitting a walk-off home run in the 12th inning, Jayson Nix came to the plate in the ninth inning Wednesday with a chance to do it again.

But the Olympian was unable to recreate Tuesday night's magic, popping out to the catcher and stranding the tying run at second base in a 5-3 loss to New Orleans in front of 5,177 at Security Service Field.

Jeff Dragicevich led off the ninth inning with his first career Triple-A home run off New Orleans closer Nate Field.

Field, who blew the save in Tuesday night's ballgame, then issued a walk to Chris Frey before Sullivan's two-out double put the tying runs in scoring position. The former Sky Sox pitcher eventually earned his 8th save of the season after Nix popped out.

Anderson Machado put the Zephyrs ahead early with a solo shot off Sky Sox starter Jason Hirsh in the second inning. A run-scoring single by Jesus Feliciano followed by a Andy Green's RBI double in the fifth gave New Orleans a three-run lead in a game they'd never trail.

Hirsh (2-3) allowed two more runs to cross the plate in the sixth inning when Chris Aguila took a 1-0 pitch over the center field wall. The Sky Sox starter allowed five runs on the afternoon in seven innings.

Claudio Vargas (4-2) earned the win after tossing 6.1 innings. He allowed seven hits and two runs (one earned), including a sixth-inning home run off the bat off Christian Colonel.

The Sky Sox and Zephyrs continue their four-game set Thursday with a 7:05 PM start time. Sean Smith (3-3, 5.71) will take the hill for Colorado Springs opposite Brandon Knight (5-1, 1.60).
