Fairbanks Grizzlies News Release

Fairbanks, AK. The Fairbanks Grizzlies are pleased to announce the signing of QB Donovan Porterie from the University of New Mexico. The 6'4 215 lb QB from Port Arthur, TX was a 4-year starter and 4-time team captain for the Lobos and earned the Lobo Club Award for Unselfish Devotion To Team at the conclusion of his senior year. Porterie is regarded as one of the most productive QB's in program history with 5 games over 300 yards passing and ranked among the top-10 all-time at UNM in passing yards (6,756 - 3rd), TD passes (33 - 5th), completions (614 - 3rd), efficiency rating (116.48 - T-10th) and left UNM as the most accurate passer in school history among the 5 QBs with 4,000+ career yards...officially 2nd with a 58%.

Porterie was the 3rd ranked high school QB in the state of Texas and 17th ranked QB prospect in the nation coming out of Port Arthur, TX. Donovan received All-Conference football honors and Academic All-American recognition as a senior. As a freshman at the University of New Mexico, Porterie was named to the Freshman All-American team by the Sporting News. Porterie threw for over 3,000 yards as a sophomore and led UNM to big wins at the University of Arizona and against Nevada in the New Mexico Bowl. In the New Mexico Bowl Porterie threw for 354 yards to earn Offensive MVP honors. As a junior Porterie was lost for the season with a knee injury but bounced back for a strong senior season that saw him perform his best in games at Texas Tech, at Texas A&M and against BYU. Porterie was signed by the Detriot Lions as a free agent.

"Obviously having Donovan join our organization is a great addition to our football team," stated Fairbanks Grizzlies Head Coach Robert Fuller. "Donovan is one heck of a football player and a great person. He is a humble guy that cares about the success of the team and that is refreshing. He went through 4 offensive systems in his 5 years at New Mexico so I know he will pick up what we are doing quickly and he has the potential to be an impact player for us."

The Grizzlies are set to begin training camp on February 13, 2011 and have an exhibition game scheduled to be played at the Carlson Center on February 21, 2011 at 7:05 p.m.

The Fairbanks Grizzlies are proud members of the Indoor Football League (IFL). The 2011 season kicks off in February. Season tickets for the Grizzlies 2011 season and exhibition game are available for purchase. Call (907) 452-5123 for details.
