Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN---The Central Hockey League announced the conference and division alignment for the 2005-2006 season on Tuesday and while the Memphis RiverKings will still reside in the Northeast Division, the neighborhood will have a slightly different look.
Last season, the division consisted of the RiverKings, Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs, Oklahoma City Blazers, Tulsa Oilers and Fort Worth Brahmas. Due to changes in the make-up of the league for the coming season, Tulsa and Oklahoma City have been moved to the Northwest Division. That leaves the RiverKings, Mudbugs, Brahmas and the expansion Youngstown SteelHounds as members of the Northwest Division.
Franchises in Topeka, San Angelo and New Mexico ceased operations following last season causing the league to go from 17 teams to 15 for the upcoming campaign. The New Mexico Scorpions are set to return with a new arena in 2006-2007.
The Northwest Division will feature three of last season's four Northern Conference playoff teams with Colorado, Wichita and Tulsa joining Oklahoma City, which just missed the post season in 2004-2005.
The only change in the Southern Conference will be the number of teams. The departure of San Angelo will leave the Southwest Division with three teams: Amarillo, Lubbock and Odessa. The Southeast Division is the only one that remains unchanged with Austin, Corpus Christi, Laredo, and Rio Grande Valley.
The C.H.L. also announced that the playoff format will remain unchanged and that the complete 2005-2006 season schedule will be announced in the coming weeks.
