September 23, 2010 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
Fairbanks Grizzlies News Release
The Fairbanks Grizzlies organization formally announce the departure of Sean Ponder as head coach. Coach Ponder served as the head coach of the Grizzlies for the 2009 and 2010 seasons. After taking over a team that finished 3-11 in it's inaugural season in 2008, Ponder guided the team to the franchises first playoff berth, playoff victory, and winning season finishing 7-7 in 2009. In 2010 Ponder continued to lead the team to new records and highlights, including the Indoor Football League's first ever quadruple overtime game against the Tri-Cities Fever which was eventually won by the Grizzlies, a thrilling victory over the two time IFL Champion Billings Outlaws as time expired on the game clock, and many other highlights that all eventually lead to the Grizzlies making the playoffs for the 2nd consecutive season and finishing with a regular season record of 9-5 before losing in the playoffs to the San Angelo Stampede Express.
The hardships and strain of being away from family for such long periods of time greatly influenced this mutual decision between Coach Ponder and the Grizzlies organization. Coach Ponder will be missed by the Grizzlies organization, players and great fans of the team. Coach Ponder has expressed his sorrow for his departure, stating that he and his family were welcomed with open arms by our wonderful community. Coach Ponder and his family are wished the greatest of future successes by the entire Fairbanks Grizzlies organization.
The task of replacing the vacant head coaching position will begin immediately. The Fairbanks Grizzlies are set to begin their 4th season of play at the end of February 2011 with the schedule due to be released in mid-October of this year.
