New Haven County's Stawarz Named Rookie Pitcher of the Year

Jarrett Stawarz, a right-handed pitcher for the New Haven County Cutters, was named the Can-Am League's Rookie Pitcher of the Year Thursday. The Burlington, CT native and University of Hartford alum went 9-7 this season with a 4.58 earned run average. His nine victories tied for the team lead and he was second among Cutters pitcher in strikeouts with 70 in 90.1 innings pitched.

After pitching effectively out of the bullpen to begin the season (a 2.49 ERA and 2-3 record in 12 appearances) Stawarz was brought into the starting rotation July 1. He won five out of his first seven starts and helped the Cutters get off to a fast start in the second half. Included in those seven outings were back-to-back gems: a six inning, one-run, one hit performance on July 7 in the first game of a doubleheader against the Elmira Pioneers and a five-hit shutout of the Grays on July 12.

Stawarz was honored as the league's Pitcher of the Week for the week ending on July 17.

The Cutters had one other recipient of a post-season award. Derrick Gibson was named to the league's All-Star team earlier in the week. The former Colorado Rockies outfielder finished with the ninth best batting average (.324) and third highest on base percentage (.426). In 77 games, he drove in 62 runs and hit 12 home runs.

Currently leading the best-of-five division series against the Worcester Tornadoes, 1-0, the Cutters will start Stawarz in game four, Saturday at Yale Field (7:05 p.m.), if it is necessary.

The playoffs will shift to Yale Field for game three on Friday at 7:05 p.m. with Courtney Hall pitching for New Haven County. Games four and five will follow on Saturday and Sunday (2:05), if necessary.
