New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Coming off a bye weekend in the MLS schedule, the New England Revolution will play two games this week, including the semifinal of the 2007 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
On Tuesday, Tuesday, Sept. 4, the Revs will face the Carolina RailHawks of the United Soccer Leagues First Division on for the right to play for the Open Cup Championship. The game will be played at 7 p.m. at Veterans Stadium in New Britain, Conn. On Sunday, Sept. 9, the Revolution will travel to Washington to face D.C. United at 3 p.m. at RFK Stadium in a battle of MLS' top two teams.
NEW ENGLAND VS. D.C. UNITED TEAM NOTES
- United leads the overall series against New England, 23-17-6, in MLS regular-season games
- New England is 6-14-3 in regular-season games played in Washington, and have earned a result in each of their last three trips to RFK Stadium, including a 1-0 win in the 2006 Eastern Conference Championship ... the Revs own an 11-9-3 record at home against D.C., including a 5-3-3 mark at Gillette Stadium.
- The teams played to a 1-1 draw on Thursday, May 3, before D.C. earned a 3-0 victory at Gillette Stadium on Aug. 5.
- Last season, the two teams split the four-game season series, 1-1-2, and the teams were knotted in total goals scored, 4-4
- The teams have met in three postseason series with D.C. owning a 2-1-1 edge in those matches ... the Revs defeated D.C., 1-0, on Nov. 5, 2006 to win the Eastern Conference Championship for the second consecutive season
REVS PLAYER NOTES VS. D.C. UNITED
- Taylor Twellman leads New England with career goals (12) against United, one of three team s against which he's scored 10 or more goals ... four of his goals have been game-winning strikes ... Twellman has also recorded three multiple-goal games against D.C.
- Taylor Twellman recorded his first career hat trick on Sept. 7, 2002 at Gillette Stadium in a 3-0 victory for New England against D.C.
- Steve Ralston leads the Revs in career assists (11) against D.C, including five while with the Revolution
- Matt Reis has posted a 1.35 goals against average against United with a 5-7-5 record, including three shutouts with both Los Angeles and New England

Josh Gros scored the game's first goal and Luciano Emilio scored two goals as D.C. United earned a 3-0 victory at Gillette Stadium ... Gros put D.C. up 1-0 in the 22nd minute, pouncing on a loose rebound of a Matt Reis save ... Emilio pushed the lead to 2-0 nine minutes later in the 31st minute, before closing the scoring in the 76th minute on a break-away goal from Ben Olsen.
NEWS & NOTES
REVS' OPEN CUP HISTORY
The Revolution is 7-6-2 all-time in U.S. Open Cup play, reaching the final of the event in 2001 ... the Revs have participated in the tournament eight times, including this season, since the team's inception: 1997, 2000, 2001, and 2003-07 ... the team's best-ever showing was a runner-up finish in 2001, falling to the Los Angeles Galaxy, 2-1, in stoppage time in the final at Titan Stadium in Fullerton, Calif.
REVS MAKE SECOND SEMIFINAL APPEARANCE
The Revolution is making its second appearance in the semifinals of the U.S. Open Cup ... the Revs also advanced to the "final four" in 2001... also in 2001, the Revs moved on to the championship game, where they lost to Los Angeles in overtime... the Revs advanced to the semis behind a 2-1 victory over the Harrisburg City Islanders at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday, Aug. 8... Andy Dorman and Taylor Twellman each scored to give the Revs' a 2-0 halftime lead, but the City Islanders struck on Matt Tanzini's 34-yard free kick, pulling within one goal.
FINALS DATES/LOCATIONS SET
The winner of the Revs-RailHawks semifinal will travel to play for the championship of the 2007 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup ... should the Revs advance to the final and the Seattle Sounders (USL-1) defeat FC Dallas (MLS), the Revs would meet the Sounders at the Qwest Field in Seattle on Tuesday, Oct. 2, at 10 p.m. ET ... should the Revs and Dallas advance, the teams would meet at FCD's Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas, on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 8 p.m. ET.
LEAGUE LEADERS
The Revs have 42 points on the season, tied with D.C. United for the most points in MLS this season ... after the two Eastern Conference leaders, Western Conference leader Houston is third overall (39 pts.), followed by three teams all with 36 points: Chivas USA, FC Dallas and the New York Red Bulls ... if the MLS Cup Playoffs started this weekend, the Revs would be the second overall seed and would face Kansas City in the first round.
CLEARING THE AIR
After a summer that saw the entire Eastern Conference in a virtual logjam, the top two have finally created some separation at the top ... the Revolution and D.C. United, with an MLS-best 42 points, now have a six-point lead over third place New York (36 pts.).
12 STRONG
The Revolution's 12 wins marks MLS' second-highest win total this season, one behind D.C. United's 13 victories ... this marks the third-straight season the Revs have recorded 12 wins, and the ninth season overall the team has recorded at least 12 victories.
FINALLY SOME REST
The Revs had a hectic August playing eight games in four weeks - including a stretch of seven games in 21 days - and finally were rewarded with rest last week via a bye in the MLS schedule ... the Revs had Labor Day weekend off, and return to the MLS schedule on Sunday, Sept. 9, at D.C. United with just one MLS game per week scheduled through the rest of the season.
REVS TRANSACTIONS: AUGUST 31, 2007
The New England Revolution announced on Friday, Aug. 31, that Sainey Nyassi, a member of Gambia's 2007 Under-20 World Cup squad, has signed with Major League Soccer to play for the Revs ... a midfielder, Nyassi occupies one of the Revs' youth international roster spots ... additionally, the Revs announced that Arsene Oka and Ryan Solle had been released, and that the team had obtained FC Dallas' natural first-round selection in the 2008 Supplemental Draft in exchange for salary budget considerations.
