FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Revolution's Community Relations department was selected as the Marisa Colaiano 2022 MLS Community Relations Team of the Year as part of Major League Soccer's 2022 Mark Abbott MLS Club Awards, the league announced on Monday. The league's end-of-year awards recognize the clubs and individuals driving business, fostering innovation, and delivering value to fans and communities. The Revolution's Community Relations Team receives the league's top honor in recognition for its steadfast commitment to being active and engaged community members in Boston and throughout New England's six states. The group focuses its various initiatives around five key pillars: childhood cancer awareness, inclusiveness and accessibility in soccer, concussion awareness, recognition of military and first responders, and social justice and equity.
The Revolution Community Relations department includes Vice President of Marketing and Community Relations Cathal Conlon, Director of Fan and Community Engagement Dave Campopiano, Fan Engagement Manager Matt Miller, and Community Engagement Coordinator Emily Plowman.
"We are honored to be recognized by Major League Soccer for the work affecting positive change in the New England community and our sport, led by the Revolution's Community Relations team and the New England Revolution foundation," Revolution President Brian Bilello said. "I am proud that our club is represented by such a talented and passionate group of individuals who work tirelessly to embody the values we hold dear as an organization. Congratulations to Cathal, Dave, Matt, and Emily for this well-deserved honor. I'd also like to thank all our community partners for letting us work with their organizations as well as our fans, players, and partners for all their support in our community efforts. We look forward to continuing these wonderful efforts in 2023 and beyond."
A central pillar of the Revolution Community Relations Team's efforts is the club's C.H.A.N.G.E. platform committed to promoting social justice and racial equity. C.H.A.N.G.E. stands for Converse, Help, Amplify, Nurture, Galvanize and Educate. In 2022, the Revolution also raised $20,000 for Boston Centers for Youth and Families through the Touches for C.H.A.N.G.E. program.
Furthermore, the Revolution and the Kraft Family continued to fund the Revolution Players Collaborative Fund, which grants bi-monthly donations to grassroots organizations identified and selected by a coalition of active Revolution players. Since its inception, the Players Collaborative Fund has awarded $160,000 to community leaders in New England, including 2022 grants to the New England Culinary Arts Training (NECAT), Women of Color Entrepreneurs, Breakthrough Greater Boston, the North Shore Juneteenth Association, the Chica Project, and the Emerging Adult Court of Hope (EACH).
This season also included the club's second annual Match for C.H.A.N.G.E., hosted at Gillette Stadium on August 13. The club collaborated with Black Owned Bos. to host a pop-up marketplace at Patriot Place featuring 15 local Black-owned businesses. Other gameday initiatives throughout the 2022 MLS season included the Revolution's annual Unified Soccer Match in partnership with Special Olympics Massachusetts, the Concussion Awareness Match in October with Taylor Twellman's ThinkTaylor foundation, Fight Childhood Cancer night in September, and an exhibition match for the New England Amputee Soccer Team during the MLS Soccer For All Week.
During each home match in 2022, the club honored a local first responder, member of the armed forces or individual making a difference in the community through the Hero of the Match program with in-stadium recognition at Gillette Stadium. In addition, the club hosted the Revolution Drive Series at select home matches to collect much-needed items for local charitable organizations throughout New England. Among the beneficiaries during the 2022 season were Cradles for Crayons, Host Homes, and United Heroes League.
The MLS Community Relations Team of the Year award is named in honor of the late Marisa Colaiano, who served as Senior Manager of Community Relations for the Colorado Rapids for 10 years. Colaiano, who passed away in 2012 as a result of complications from multiple sclerosis, positively affected the lives of countless children and families within communities in Colorado.
