New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Revolution today announced its preseason roster for the 2009 Major League Soccer season. Players will report to Gillette Stadium for the first time for entrance physicals this Saturday, Jan. 31, while the team is scheduled to conduct its first training session on Monday, Feb. 2.
There will be a total of 27 players reporting to preseason camp in New England, with 19 of those players returning to the roster after spending at least a portion of the 2008 season with the Revolution. Of the eight new players in camp, five were selected by New England in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft, two were signed by the club as undrafted free agents this offseason and one is being brought in as an invitee.
Almost the entire training camp roster will report for entrance physicals on Saturday and will begin training on Monday, as only second-year forward Kheli Dube will be absent when camp commences. Dube will join the team for training following his return to the United States from Zimbabwe.
New offseason signings Mike Videira and Zack Simmons will be in camp with the club for the first time, while Argenis Fernandez will rejoin the Revolution after spending the second half of the 2008 season on loan with LD Alajuelense in his native Costa Rica.
Of New England's seven draftees from the 2009 MLS SuperDraft, only Andrei Gotsmanov (Creighton) and Tyrel Lacey (Tulsa) will not join the Revolution for preseason camp, as both players have chosen to remain in school to finish their degrees. The two players are expected to join the team in May for their trials.
The only player who will be part of New England's preseason camp who is not either signed or a 2009 SuperDraft selection is goalkeeper Brian Visser, who was invited to join the Revolution for training after playing four years at DePaul University.
The Revs will travel to Austin, Texas and North Carolina for outdoor training after three weeks of conditioning training and light competitive drills at indoor facilities in the Foxborough area. During those trips, the Revolution will play preseason matches against Austin Aztex FC (Saturday, Feb. 28 at 8:30 p.m. ET), Wake Forest University (Saturday, March 7 at 7 p.m. ET) and the Carolina Railhawks (Saturday, March 14 at 7 p.m. ET).
The Revolution begins the 2009 season at 10:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, March 21, when the team travels to face the San Jose Earthquakes at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. The match will be televised locally by TV38 and will be available to radio listeners on the WEEI Radio Network. The Revs open their 2009 home slate on Saturday, April 4, when they host FC Dallas.
