"What's new at the ballpark?"
It's a question fans often ask as a new season of Lexington Legends baseball approaches.
This year, there are several answers. The Legends have invested more than $500,000 in upgrades, all designed to add to the fan experience.
Immediately upon entering the ballpark, fans will notice a more wide-open entry plaza that will make it easier to get to seating and concession areas.
But the most noticeable change to the appearance of the ballpark is the addition of a 2,000-square-foot deck, to be known as the Bullpen Patio, down the right field line. The Bullpen Patio will be open to all fans, regardless of their seat location, and bar service will be available.
"Our fans will notice the upgrades immediately as they enter the ballpark," said Legends President and CEO Andy Shea. "The entry plaza is more fan-friendly, and as our fans walk around the ballpark in all directions, they will see various other cosmetic improvements to the concourse and concessions area. The Bullpen Patio along the right field line will be a beautiful addition, complete with a bar that is open to all of our fans for every game."
Also this season, for the first time in the team's 16-year history, the Legends are operating their own concessions rather than outsourcing, and have focused on affordability and a wide range of menu selections.
Food and fun go together at the ballpark, and sometimes the food is fun. This year, fans can enjoy a fried bologna sandwich served between halves of a glazed doughnut (featuring Kentucky Proud bologna, of course). The Legends will also offer new and unique options on burgers as part of a new menu. On top of that, fans will enjoy lower concession prices as well.
The team merchandise store, now known as the Stache Shoppe, has also been upgraded. Renovations have created more space for shoppers to make their way around the store as they decide on a variety of gear and souvenirs from both the Legends and their major league affiliate, the World Series champion Kansas City Royals.
"The Legends wanted to give our fans an improved experience to enjoy with their friends, families and associates," Shea said. "There's a keen focus on affordability, cleanliness and fun," he added. "If our fans like what they see as much as our staff does, then we've accomplished our goal."
The first of 70 Legends home games will be played Thursday, April 7, when the Legends take on the Lakewood Blue Claws, an affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Legends will also serve as host for the South Atlantic League All-Star game Tuesday, June 21.
